Meteor or Comet hit. Massive blast. Knocked down miles and miles of forest. Little critters were vapourised. Was in the middle of nowhere so no-boday cared. Then end.

There are other theories, though these range from the ridiculous (UFO crash) to the somewhat plausible if unproven (Verneshot explosion, for example).
