More Than One Shuffle
The exile thing has got quite a few backs up.
Why don't we have more than one shuffle (say three) in a round? Every 4 weeks or so?
If galaxies are random anyway, why does it matter if you get another random one?
Obviously buddypacks would remain together.
Advantages:
No abuse of the exiling
Would allow for galaxies to be evened out with larger and smaller planets so you don't have those super-galaxies
Might make the game more accessible for newer players as if they land in a crap gal then they might be able to meet other players on a new shuffle
Disadvantages:
More people would probably fakenick, as hiding would only be for 4 weeks at a time
Would make arbiters and coordinate logging hell
You'd inevitably get people whining that they aren't in a good gal (but people rarely would go "good idea!" when moving from a crap gal into a good gal)

Re: More Than One Shuffle
The arbiter disadvantage is worst for the smaller alliances that dont have planets saved by planetname but by coords.

Re: More Than One Shuffle
We have a "Wanted" thing in galaxy politics, this idea could work if the shuffle shuffled all Non-Wanted planets around, rather than the galaxy exiling tehm. Remove the exile feature (but leave self-exile perhaps)..

So all the inactives and small planets would move from one galaxy to another? :P

I think the main problem with the suggestion is further than this; namely that you wouldnt be able to trust your galaxymates anymore (with exception of your BP, presumably). With many paid randoms, and to a lesser extent everyone else, being stuck in a galaxy together strongly encourages co-operation between players. It makes building a longer-term relationship where players are willing to send defence more viable, as due to the forced co-habitation it is highly likely that you'll receive help in return. If you know that those people will be gone again in 4 weeks, then there is very little incentive to help them now - and as time goes by even less incentive than before. If you know about game theory wrt repeated games of finite and known repetition, then you'll see what i mean.
Why not just give gals the flick and organise everything into clusters; that way there will be more people around for new players to talk to anyway. :\

This already happens, but people are stupid enough to waste resources on it

As for the idea, its been suggested before and I think it's good. Perhaps the BP should stay together though.

What Caj said + you can set your own planet to "not wanted" (or something else) so when the next shuffle happens people who are unhappy with their gal are also shuffled.

My worry with that would be the second shuffle 'wouldnt occur' because technically only the idle planets would move and everyone else would stay in the same places.

If you can set your own planet to "not wanted" in case you're unhappy with your current galaxy then you just have to wait for the shuffle instead of paying exile costs. So the idle planets + the people that want to change galaxy's but don't want to pay the cost will be shuffled (thought that was clear in my last post )

Re: More Than One Shuffle
Ah. I was hoping you wanted a compulsory shuffle, to shake up the universe and reignite some form of challenge.
Imagine the top galaxy being split up at the midpoint of the round, the game would be shaken up considerably.

But would it be improved?
It's like saying "let's reset every planet back to 0 halfway through the round - because the game would be shaken up considerably!!!!!!11".

Re: More Than One Shuffle
Planets wouldn't be affected though (not directly)!
Its the galaxy structure that changes.

Of course they'd be affected. Their new galaxy might be unable to provide them with in-gal defence, they might be screwed over on alliance composition of this new galaxy, they'd probably have to exile a load of inactives again. Buddypacks hardly dominate all of their galaxies do they?

A good bp takes control of the gal right after shuffle & allready has a galchannel set up before shuffle

Re: More Than One Shuffle
Yes they are affected, but not directly.
I was responding to you "let's reset every planet back to 0 halfway through the round" which implied that everyone was reset.
I want to see everyone relocated.
It comes down to the age old issue. Planets at the top won't want it to happen, planets at the bottom probably will - same as most XP debates.

Niw, I like this suggestion.

NO. This would increase the fortification of good gals. Think of it: every good member they keep, every bad one they kick out.
