Arrow Friends (the series)

Well, I've been really addicted to it for the last 3 months now. I watched every single episode from the beginning, and right now I am in season 10, ep. 10. That was a whole lot of Friends for me (230 eps á 22min).

And now I've got the best moments I wanted to share with you, and just say some things:

First of all, it's a GREAT show. It gets VERY emotional, it's about the things in life that REALLY matter, so there are some moments where you could actually start crying (I didn't say I didn't ). So, that's the good part now. I always thought the music choice was really good in some parts, so I'm glad I found this site, which answers basically every music question you could ever have to an episode.

So I want to share some of the best moments with you right now, but I really DON'T want to give away something, so here's a good old fashioned

*** S P O I L E R W A R N I N G *** (not for Season 10 though)

As Season 10 is the newest and recent one (and also the very last one), that hasn't been aired in Germany yet, I won't post anything about it.

I strongly encourage you not to watch any scenes ahead of what you've seen until now (IF you're watching all episodes in correct order, that is).

[For the video scenes you'll need some sort of DivX-Coded, e.g. this. I recommend ffdShow though]

So, here we go:
First of all, Season 2, touching moment (752kb). Note: It rains, as always when it gets serious ^^.
I always thought this music sounded like U2, but if you look it up, you'll find out they didn't actually have the license to play "U2 - With or without you" yet, so chose something U2-ish.

I then noticed the same sound here (1.11MB).

It's a lot about marriage and weddings in Friends. This is where you can actually pick up some things from (I mean, HEY, it's an ok way to learn how proposing works). Don't take me too serious though, but this end of Season 4 REALLY has got it. One VERY NICE MUSIC in it again. I'm sure, I would have died if I'd had to wait for several months after this ending (10.6MB). You could argue if it's possible that things like this can happen, but I've got to say: I totally bought it!

I'm not saying there aren't any good scenes in all the other seasons, but the last thing I want to show you is the end of Season 9 (4.64MB). Although I did know what was going to happen, it is SOOO highly dramatic. And that's what most people in Germany are currently still left with . Well anyway, main reason for this cruel tension is IMO the great music again (5.41MB).

So I'm at the end of my little tour.
I've gotta say: I probably "overdid Friends" the last week, it has become a bit too much now, and the most annoying thing:

I can't hear the words "I am SOOO sorry" anymore. Do they REALLY mean it every other episode?
It's the basic construct: One character does / says something the others don't agree with. Then they lie anyway to not hurt the person. This lie builds up really badly until something really strange is done to "protect" it. In the end then they're sorry and we all learn that lying [difficult word] to your friends is bad.

It's generally this "moralic end": Too many times people realize "what's the most important thing".
A bit like in Simpsons sometimes, after Homer had some crazy ideas or Bart did something really bad.
Or just as well in Family Guy: Peter comes back to his family, apologizes and swears he's gonna be better in the future.
I know I'm overemphasizing now, but the only series I know that DOES NOT have this problem towards the end of some episodes is Futurama.

Ah well. I still LOVE friends, and I'm really glad I could watch this marathon the last 3 months. I wonder what comes next, after my average of 3 (?) episodes a day.

Well, but I DO know the reason I'm failing maths this saturday :-/

P.S.: Why is it always Rachel? Because she's Jennifer Aniston maybe?

Re: Friends (the series)

just to be an asshole, i can post here, right now, what happens on the last episode - but then again, im generally a nice person so i wont do it - it was entertaining staring at jennifer aniston's breasts for 30 minutes at a time and probably the only reason why i watched most of the early seasons and the 10th.. all in all though, its a good show

Family Guy spoofs this more often than not.

"Well Peter, I guess you learnt a pretty valuable lesson."
"Nope."

Friends, when it started, was reasonably amusing at times. The writing team was capable of stringing together some semi amusing one-liners in a Simpsons-esque fashion. The female cast members were reasonably pleasant on the eye I suppose. That's all I can think of as positive points about the show.

To call it a "great" is ridiculous however. Someone described it as lifestyle porn which I think is fairly accurate. It's watching a show about people who have insane amounts of free-time, live in gigantic NY apartments which in reality they could never realistically afford, are all reasonably picture perfect, who pontificate about loneliness with their close friends (whom they get to see all the time) and their attractive partners. Their biggest problems are who they fancy and whether one of thier obnoxious friends will mind. They're basically living in some kind of perma-high school. Despite having some kind of professor amongst their number they never seem to have an intelligent conversation (OK, one time about evolution) and I never heard them say anything political. They're kind of the perfect people corporate America want us to be.

Quite frankly I hate the show and I hope everyone involved dies in painful circumstances.

Re: Friends (the series)

I thought the first few series were good, some very funny bits, some (quite) emotional bits, some cringing bits.
However - I thought that as it went on it got more and more annoying. Each of the characters became exaggerated. The storylines became more obvious (I haven't seen any of the last series of friends but guessed correctly what happened in the last episode). And basically the show just got worse. I lost all empathy for the characters, realised how greedy the actors and how they'd all turned less attractive as the show went on and stopped watching.

i find this most accurately sums up my feeling about the saccharin corporate crap that we suffered for so very long.

the only additional point i would make is that to me it was unsurprising that a collection of 'pretty people' should be both vacuous and shallow.

Re: Friends (the series)

One time I was 'forced to watch it because my brother and his girlfriend where visiting my house and they just can't miss one episode. There was some scene in a bathroom. Joey or whoever it was was fixing a hole in the bathroom, but he couldn't do it so one of those women walked in and he wanted to show he was able to fix it so he placed a plummer over the hole to cover it.

The inside audience, i mean the mass that always laugh at any given joke in those american shows to make things even more hilarious, where laughing their arses off, so did my brother and his girlfriend. And my mother.

I felt so lonely and isolated.

My girlfriend loves the show as well

It's just escapism really. It's not much more than a glorified soap opera.

I like watching it, not because I can identify with the characters, or that it's hilarious, or I care about them, but because I can turn off happily and just get absorbed in it. It's relaxing. Very lazy and non-constructive, but most things on television are anyway.

also dont forget that a coffee shop in manhattan with no black folks, and no asians behind the counter, and no puerto ricans with NY yankee ballcaps uttering the occasional spanish curse word - is just virtually NOT possible.. maybe in wisconsin it is, but not in new york city..

she has big tits as well, almost a milf, perhaps too old.

I like friends, always have always will.

The best episode was the one where Brad Pitt starred. He hated rachel, it was very comic, even more comic now brad and jen have split.

Arrow Re: Friends (the series)

Just seen the very last episode. So I'm through with it!
I couldn't find any rest until I decided to watch the last couple of episodes as well...

You, nobody forces you people to like the show. And it's not MENT to be realistic. Every single episode, you can ask yourself "WHAT? This can't happen!". Especially the free time issue. I didn't even think about how expensive appartments in NY are, or that there are no foreigners shown.
But, honestly: I don't care!

I don't watch Friends because I want serious analysis or reflection of society. Most people do have enough problems on their own.
This is sort of "balsam for your soul". For relaxation. It's about love and friendship and situations you sometimes would've imagined on your own ("what happend if my best friend and my girlfriend...").

Problems aren't solved very satisfying. The plot is not always "logical" or continuous all the time. But it doesn't have to be.
It's a sitcom. A soap opera. What do you expect?

I could actually try to make some points or argue a bit, but I'm sure you'd knock me over pretty quickly. And as I've just finished the whole series, I'm kind of "done" with it anyway.

I might even think different if I wasn't a lonely single guy who started to study physics in a town full of mathematicians, physicians, engineers, etc (hey, category "male, geek", :-/).
So I sort of needed this show as "wishful thinking". And for entertainment while making myself sandwiches.

So I won't try to force or convince you. If you don't like it, that's fine. But lots of people do, and I was just one of them.
