Sickening Iraqi tactics.

Iraqi security forces are seizing children in order to force their fathers to join the military, and were executing men who resisted.

Sickening to say the least.

"1400: Several hundred tribespeople are reported to have died at the hand of Iraqi forces in a village near Kirkuk, says the BBC's Jim Muir in Kurdish-controlled northern Iraq."

The penalty in the US is a fine of up to $250,000 and up to 5 years in jail although I believe around 2 years is customary. I find that rather sickening as well.

But there is no conscription in the US. The Draft was ended years ago.

I would never suggest such a thing.
This story may very well be true. However, I would make the daring assumption that people at war with a country aren't necessarily the best people to rely on as news sources about said country.
The penalty (I believe) for running away in the Russian army (during WW2) was death by firing squad. I would expect any country being invaded to have a similar policy. Is it just? Of course not. But entirely predictable.

In the finnish front they had armed squads who shot anyone trying to retreat. no wonder they lost 200+k men

Soldiers abandoning there posts is completely different from pressing Civilians into service at the point of a gun?

Not a comparison.
Even if conscription was being undertaken by the UK or the US, removing someones liberty does not even come close to threatening their Family, or executing them without trial.

Dont know about you but if someone held a gun to my Mother, fathers, etc... Head lets say... I'd be ALOT more cooperative.
Atleast going to prison theres a good chance of coming out alive.
When you get shot... theres usually a good chance that could be fatal. I'd rather take the Prison sentence then the firing squad.
Unless its a life term - then give me the easy way out.

The iraqi army
is like the Soviet army.
Two armies - one that fights, and one that shoots the other lot if they don't fight or try to run away.

I'm not English. I don't live in a country where English is the primary language.
