A thread about me
So what do i do?
To anyone whos had the displeasuring of hearing me speak over the last few weeks, youll know the whole Uni malarky.
Needed 2 B's, got an A and an Advanced Higher B, celebrated getting in. Got a letter saying "you're rejected", phoned up, was then informed that i needed 2 B's (contrary to letter + teachers advice). Appealed in two subjects to attempt to get another B. Sent email urging them to consider the fact id already got a B in the advanced higher (basically first year uni) course, which was ignored. Wrote letter, went to school, english teacher and head of english department added attachments vouching for me.
So yesterday my dad called Maplin, and i called him back on my break. He said the admissions officer called but wouldnt disclose to anyone but me. I called her back this morning. She reiterated that i need to know the results of my appeals by the 31st of August. Appeal results can take up to the 25th of September. Which of course, is no good as they cant hold a place for me.
So as it stands, presuming my appeals Dont come through in time, or come through in time but are unsuccessful my options are thus.
1. Apply to Glasgow Uni 2004 (assuming i get a B at least on appeal - but too late)
2. Decline all uni offers for now. Work full time for a year, and apply to a different course next year.
3. Try and apply to a college for a year to do some more Highers, making sure i can at least apply successfully somewhere next year.
4.a Accept stirling's offer, learn how to drive, travel back and ****ing forth to stirling every day for four years. Graduate from stirling
4.b Accept stirling's offer, learn how to drive, travel back and ****ing forth to stirling every day for a year. At end of year, transfer to Glasgow. (Could even be placed straight in year 2 if i do well enough at stirling, if not, id definetely be in year 1 next year so long as i dont totally flop a course ive already passed)
5. Accept stirlings offer, leave home at seventeen and go live on campus
I have **** all time to decide too. Isnt life wonderful?

I would do the stirling thing for one year, but live on their campus. Assuming that you can make your own choices on subjects, i would take subjects that interest you, but aren't seen as "important" in this day and age of cold concrete and hard cash. I would, for example, take stuff like philosophy, society and things-like-that stuff.
And then, next year, getting in at the "better" choice, but taking "boring" stuff that helps you in R/L.

If you do 2 you could work til say xmas, save the money then go travelling for a few months.
If you go to Stirling live on campus as it's a lot better than living at home. You don't know what you miss out on by not living at the uni

I dont know what Stirling is like, but if its any good i would go with this option personally. I love living at uni and being away from home. I know people that went to uni from home, and regret it a lot, you dont tend to socialise as much with everyone.
Having said that, dont go if you dont 110% want to. If you do that the chances are you will drop out, simply because you go with the mind set of not really wanting to be there, and end up never enjoying yourself and so quitting.
I probably havent helped out much there but if you want to chat on irc or something mate just give me a shout.

I dont want to go to stirling really. it is however, a really nice campus. I doubt theres many better in the uk.
I dont 110% want to leave. I have liberal parents. I have enough freedom. I have friends here. And im seventeen. Id be living on my own, and unable to buy alcohol.
I feel somewhat aggrieved to have achieved more than the requirements i was set and then be rejected. Whereas two of my friends achieved less than they needed, and were accepted anyway. And another one failed Advanced Higher English, but is in the same course as i wanted because he got a B in a mickey mouse subject - art.
Actually, somewhat aggrieved is an understatement. Im only appearing calm because i dont know whether to be furious, or upset.

There are worse places to go than Stirling. The campus IS nice, the halls are decent and it's really easy to get to know people because it's not catered so you've pretty much got to go to the kitchen to make dinner unless you plan to live on chips for a year. The Union is smallish but it's always a good laugh and they cater for all tastes. I believe they've done it up since I was last there (3 years ago ish). There are loads of nice pubs and things to do in Stirling, it's generally a lovely place to live, at least that was my experience.
You could go to Stirling with the idea that you transfer at the end of the year, and then see how things pan out. I am biased because I really enjoyed my 4 years there. Also they have a nice English department (I did English as a second subject for two of my four years there)
If you're going to consider going there I'd recommend you leave home and stay on campus. I can only imagine travelling back and forth to be a complete pain in the butt, and to my mind part of Uni is about meeting new people etc etc, and you're not going to do that if you have to toddle off back to Glasgow every night.
However if you really don't want to go there then there's not much you can do (assuming your appeal isn't in on time) other than wait to see how your appeal went and go from there... :\
Edit: I was 17 when I went to Stirling. I managed to buy alcohol just fine. To get in the Union you just flash your reg card and after that the barstaff don't ever ask for ID so you're safe in there. Also there's a wee shop on campus who probably wouldn't ID a 2 year old. ;)

go to stirling kiddo, its a horrible prospect to have to go away from home for the first time but its not like you're going to another country to study, move into the halls, if it gets too bad (it wont) you can always go home at the weekend (how far away from stirling are you?)
you probably feel ****ty right now but good luck
ps how the hell can they say get two Bs then you get more then they asked for and they reject you, surely thats not allowed?

Go live on campus! I'd do it if it wasn't ridiculously expensive to live in central dublin.

I commuted to Uni for 3 years and generally regretted it. While it meant I had oodles of time to read it also meant by social life was somewhat devoid. Fortunately my friends from secondary school, etc were all miserable failures who all eventually gravitated back to London. All in all though, living on campus would seem better, unless you have your friends still about you. Alcohol is not a problem unless Stirling is unlike everywhere else on the planet.
I wouldn't really worry about the University itself, I'd worry about the course. Is it something you can do for four years?

A phrase i use alot.
Mostly when out in Stirling or when my friends try to convince me to go out there.
