Evil FBI shut down whiney commies (or something)
Here and here.
I've never heard of this 'Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty' thing. Does this mean that everytime some government type gets sand in his vagina he can shut down websites at will ? I don't think this is a good idea........

God bless america.

you know, im surprised that more people around here dont read theregister, what with the high prevalence of IT type people, and the fact that the stories are generally better written

Frankly, I'd like to know more than the US did the dirty work for the Italian and Swiss governments by demanding the UK hand over some servers...why didn't the pussies do it their damn selves?
And yeah, there's a treaty between the US and many european nations that allows the respective courts to have limited power on the others' soil. This is how we manage to arrest hackers and drug smugglers over there while Microsft can't dodge out on you by being a US company. when you slap them with $750mill in fines.

I am sure Microsoft will dodge out of paying the fines one way or another. Proably in one of those 'Hey lets give the EU cheaper software and call it quits' type things

Yeah, that's the odd part--why are we even in the loop here?

Surely the EU must have some similar arrangements for this sort of thing?

Yeah, for a measly $600-700M I suspect it's not worth M$'s time to fight it.

If it means that Microsoft gets EU governments using their products instead of Linux, it's more than worth it

I said the US would enforce it, not that the EU governing body weren't suckers. :P

Re: Evil FBI shut down whiney commies (or something)
It looks as though they were shut down because some norty "Rebel without a clue" on one of their servers published details of undercover operations by the Swiss Police.
Id say the Swiss want to know EXACTLY how much of that information is on those servers and how it got into the public domain .....
Which is understandable unless what the swiss police were doing is morally dubious, at which point id say "LET THE PUBLIC DECIDE", since Judges wont see both sides of the argument, just that of the police.
