I would imagine most societies have rules where the Government can intervene to stop something being published if it threatens "nataionl security". The problem is that they're the ones that get to define what this means.

Also, I'm not sure what legal standing this sort of thing actually has - i.e. if you would actually be imprisoned/fined if you broke it. I would imagine it depends.

i think usually there are livelihood-threatening fines for national dailies, and slap-on-the-wrst fines for smaller sources (blogs etc). so i understand

I don't understand why the public actually need to know the name of the guy though. It doesn't really interest me (unless I actually knew him but that's why it' been blocked)

Names aren't released for a good reason. Imagine a women said you raped her and it was all across the news, with your name and photo. Although you could be cleared completely of rape since she made it up, it would still harm your career and image irrevocably.

Im not shocked to see that the newspapers are not publishing interesting stories. Becouse, as you so nicely point out, whoever is in goverment usually have a lot of fine methods in silencing the press anyways. Not to mention that "we" all support capitalism anyways.

Im just suprised to see how openly the censorship of the press is operating.
