So I'm Heading to Ottawa on Jan 25th it turns out.

For those who aren't aware I am moving from the nice temperate climate of Scotland to the extreme climate of Canada, moreover ottawa in ontario.

In the last year me and my wonderful partner have turned out to of saved up a nice little nest egg of $3.5k cn after flight costs. The Nest-egg is going to be used to accquire an affordable nice flat and float us until we both gain full-time employment in the area (which for me may take a little while seeing as I have to apply for permanent residence before I can get work).

Now I've just got to sort out a date for my going away-do with friends and pack bags and what not.

I do know I'll prolly need a whole new wardrobe for the baltic conditions that I'll experience for 7months a year in canada :P but there is still some unfinished area's I need to cover.

Seeing as I'll be applying for permanent residence and looking to live there, I'll be needing things shipped over, seeing as this is my first move for me or my partner on this sort of scale I'd greatly desire some reccomendations on shipping of personal items from the UK to abroad.

Anyway I thought it'd be nice to enlighten you all with my immediate plans for my future :P I shall no longer be in the UK to attend meets or anything of the sort which I've had some good times at and made some friends at. Post away with opinions, advice, congratulations or if you really must, trolls.

i think the best way (a tad expensive though i think) is to get a.. oh crap my mind went blank :\.. one of those shipping container things. cargo box or something. anyway.. they're big enough you can get all your stuff and move it all in one go. get rid of the stuff you don't need. seriously :P

as far as I can remember...$3500 won't get you too far in Ottawa, it is one of the most expensive cities to live in, in Canada. A friend of mine was paying, iirc, $1100 per month for a one bedroom appartment her first year at Ottawa U

But, Ottawa is one of the nicest places I have ever been...and I plan on moving there in the next year or two to work at the Ottawa/Carleton Detention Centre...maybe we'll become friends...lollorz

We won't be living downtown, we are already set up with appointments for what look like more than adequate apartments at $685 and $705 a month utilities included. Sounds like your friend was living downtown.

So after first and last months we prolly have another 2 months covered, for the gf it's literally a matter of time before she get's a job as she has tonnes of experience(and she's purty), as for me I have to get the whole permanent residence thing which I can't apply for till the gf has a job.

Anyway at those rates we should prolly manage, failing that we do have a plan b of finding a larger place to share with two of her friends who go to ottawa U already when their leases run out in september.

One piece of advice : Make sure you've read and understood the rules for the permanent residency thing very very well. Seek independent advice on it, and make sure you have every single piece of documentation EVER relating to your life.

I've read it thoroughly.

Fortunately being single, no criminal record etc etc means all that is required of me other than filling out details is passing a full medical and getting the proper photograph.

The onus seems to be heavily on the sponsor(to which she is committed to a 10 year contract to support me no matter what lolz when she applies as a sponsor for me as a conjugal partner) which seems more legally binding than marriage :P

I lived for a year just off Elgin St in Ottawa about 8 years ago.

It's a cracking place, if I wasn't offered this job here in Florida, we'd have been looking for something up Canuck way. Great summers, stupidly cold winters, the markets on the frozen canal, the open-air cafes around the square and standing for hours in front of the Parliament building on Canada day, waiting for something to happen. All good.

Have fun, and get some more cash. Like the man says, $3.5k will get used up in no time.

winterlude is a blast...and you can cross the river into Hull to go try your luck at the Casino anytime you like. I'm sure you'll love Ottawa...I just don't want you to think it's real cheap. Oh, and my friend wasn't in Ottawa...she lived in Nepean, which is about 20 mins south-ish of Ottawa

I don't know if we will be living IN ottawa but definately around it with regards to my gf going to Ottawa U after the summer. My Gf knows someone who does live downtown in ottawa and how v expensive it is, but(for the life of me I can't remember where it's called) the places we are looking at look around 40% cheaper than downtown accomodation so I hope the cost of living round there is reflective of the cost of shelter.

That and so long as Ottawa has a decent public transit system. Being from the UK I have standards you know :P

Ottawa's public transit system (O/C Transpo) is fantastic. It runs 5am to 3am iirc...and the major routes have a bus every 5-10 minutes or so...no subway tho

Good on the transpo, I'm used to busses as it is from where I live and we are going to be spending a couple of days downtown in ottawa at a friends while we familiarise ourself with the transport and shops before making a final decision on our choice of location :P

downtown's lovely, I love it there..the Rideau Centre, the market, lot's of shops and just up the road you have the Parliament buildings, The Supreme Court of Canada, the US Embassy, countless statues and shit to look at...oh, and while in the market...be sure to check out BareFax, altho, the wife may not want to go with your on that journey

oh you're gonna so enjoy the weather in ontario compared to scotland.

Although it is colder, the air is generally quite dry and calm, and it is usually quite sunny. If you wrap up well, you'll find it a hell of a lot more pleasant , than the windy, damp, dull and bitterly cold winds that you experience in the UK (even tho its warmer temperature wise in the UK)

This is just in my general experience and from a lot of other friends who live in "colder" climates (canada, russia, eastern europe, north usa etc...). For some reason they always seem to find british winters "colder" (when it is around freezing level, than they do find winters in their respective countries where it is -ve 10 or less).

I've always wondered why that is
