240GB for £80? good?
Staples. Clearing out external Maxtor 120GB drives for $97.50.
I got the last two I could find, last two in the state according to their computers, they were selling like hot cakes.
$97.50 x 2 = $195
Use $30 off $150 coupon, brings it to $165.
Each drive has $20 rebate = $125 total.
$62.50 each drive.
around £40 a drive.
Happy happy joy joy.

Not really. An external hard drive has exactly the same innards and in internal one.
The fact most hard drives now have USB 2.0 also means the transfer rate is as fast as it can get anyway.

Damnit.
That would be ideal - given I can download DivX's at 800kbytes/sec at the moment meh 40Gb docs drive is rapidly getting full (I delete the ones I don't like very much).
And yes, I do mean bytes not bits - yes, nearly 0.8Mb a second
Yes yes, I could burn them all to CD but I don't fancy spending money on CDs and anyway, it only takes one small scratch and then it's good old "Cyclic redundancy failure" or whatever the goddamn message is.

I'm at University.
We run an internal directconnect hub when the guys at Computing Services have gone to bed.
Wheeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.
I have no idea what our net connection is - all I know is its a BIG direct connection to JANet (Joint Academic Network) and I can download stuff off the net at around 500k/sec if the website's server is up to it and the campus network isn't too busy.

Does this mean you jack cables out of the ground and then stick a hub on the end of it or what?
How do you sabotage it so?!

Your average 'fast' drive for a normal user runs at 7200rpm.
5400 is perfect for storage. Heck, I could even raid them if speed is important.

If it's the Maxtor 3000LE you're referring to (the USB2.0 drive) then I have one of them. It rawks more than everything apart from my dual 2ghz P4's.

Direct connect = a downloading program.
you can set up a 'hub' ie one person acts as server.
Personally i'd jus create shared folders with passwords and email a mate saying 'dave, films are in the folder you know the password'

Wouldn't work - due to the routing and networking setup, each block can only "see" computers in the same block - as there's 26 blocks in this hall you can see how limited that would be.
With directconnect the entier campus can share - there's an average of 3Tb available.

We had that too.
Only the campus you were on could share files.
There's an easy way around it. Use a port scanner, it'll bring up all the PC's on the network. From there you can get into their shared files.

or, you could save all that unecessary fannying about and use p2p software instead.

No, bad drives run at over 10k rpm, good drives run at 7200. 10,000 rpm drives are SCSI, which dollar for dollar is outrageously NOT worth the money, when you consider that 7200 ATA133 is plenty fast for any application. For pure storage though that doesn't need to be accessed on the fly (ie- NOT resource intensive games) its fine, although less than ideal.

He wasn't talking about cost.
He said 'decent'. SCSI are decent drives. The cost is irrelevant in this case.
