Are all insults created equally
in the NZ parliment a few days ago, a rather fat maori guy called ANOTHER fat non maori guy 'big guy'
so the non-maori guy asked if he could call the maori guy 'black guy', or somesuch thing to do with his skin colour
this causes such a stir that the non-maori guy had to make big formal apologys etc
but isnt one insult as good as the other
after hearing how the maori guy said 'big guy', its clear that its use was in the context of a insult
shouldnt the non-maori guy be able to mock him back?

Re: Are all insults created equally
No, not all insults are equal.
Insulting me for being skinny for instance, is hardly the same thing as insulting my mother if she happened to die yesterday. People are more sensitive about certain things. You can't always know what they're sensitive about of course, but race is something a lot of people are sensitive about for historical reasons.
Having said that, no-one was stopping the guy from calling the Maori guy a black guy (although Maori's aren't black but whatever). He was clearly just too much of a faggot to face the criticism/fallout of doing so. When the conservatives criticise the "PC brigade" they are basically admitting they're too scared of expressing themselves.

Generally yes, although it depends why. If I am frightened of posting that I like Blink 182 on these forums because I know I will get insulted for being shit, I'm not sure how this is anyone eleses problem but mine for being gutless.
Obviously the fear of physical violence is something different.
If it's just "I want to hold controversial views but I'm worried I'll get criticised for expressing them" then you're basically a fag. It depends on a definition of what's a reasonable criticism though.

Re: Are all insults created equally
each to his own, for the blink182 comment
what if your controversial view actively indangers your life
lets say supporting a gang whilst living in a rival gangs territory
gangs are stupidy shit, but nonetheless...

Re: Are all insults created equally
Threats/fear of physical violence are an another matter, as I've said.
The only other exception I can think of is the control over distribution of resources. If I own the only shop in town, and I refuse to sell to you because you said xyz then I suppose this could be likened to a form of coercion - but only where a monopoly exists.
Basically, this MP guy presumably apologised not because he feared physical violence but because he wanted a quiet life. If he really didn't mean what he said then apologising is fair enough, otherwise he's just gutless as stated.

Jenny would deny everything, as it might be classed as having a good time, which would entail some sort of stimulation, which could be regarded as a form of drugging, and therefore rape.

If you're going to throw a stone at someone you'd better make sure they're of the same ethnic origin as you first.

Because if you are fat you can get slimmy but if you are colored, its a life sentence.

Re: Are all insults created equally
Insults can be said to be equal if you're on an equal playing field so to speak, but even then, its the context in how something is said that makes it insulting or not.
Additionally, if you're not black and they call you black, you'd be insulted because its insulting your heritage and therefore your supposed identity and origin.

He was correct, he just expressed it stupidly. Its semantically meaningless to say someone 'is' black - only that they have dark coloured skin. You could that say Michael Jackson is a Negroid who has white skin, but only if you define precisely what the term Negroid means.
Black = black skin, end of story. It doesnt make sense to talk of some kind of inner 'essence' of blackness that people with dark skin have that goes beyond their physical appearence and their genetic makeup (which cant be determined from looking at their skin colour anyway).

Re: Are all insults created equally
negroids do have flat nose curly hair, a difference in the making of the leg bones.
Its a lot of stuff. Saying that dark skin automatically means youre black seems a bit harsh

If I wanted to say someone had black skin I'd say they had black skin. If someone has the genetic characteristics exhibited by negroes I'd say they were black. Innit?

The question is : Is this forum the domain of prejudiced white boys, or of enlightened free men who aren't shackled by convention in their expression?

can't we be both?
honestly the only even potential contradiction i see is between being enlightened and being prejudiced. and it seems quite obvious to me that the enlightened will hold their prejudices until shown some reason to change them.

The Irish cancels out the blackness and I end up literate and well-read. Somehow. By most logic I should be dealing drugs and wearing my pants around my ankles in between pints of guinness.
