Who are you calling a liberal? I dare say I identify far more with the men who wrote the constiution of the United States than you do. You may meet some idiots on the streets who fit the descriptions you read in some book about how liberals hold contradictory ideas but how ****ing dare you lump the people on here in with them.

This sort of attitude is what has destroyed the accomplishments of western society. If someone else has a bigger gun than you at some point in the future you're ****ing screwed. Moral good is objective and any attempts to deny this is the sort of liberal bullshit I imagined you were deeply opposed to. Is this sort of hypocrisy deliberate?

We need a specific name for the fallacy of semantic equivalence, where people deliberately construct their argument on the outdated meaning of a word, when in modern usage it means something different.

The people who wrote the American Constituion were not 'liberals' by today's definition of the word. The meaning of words changes over time.

We don't really have a proper definition of "liberal" now, if we ever did. On any political science course when they study "Liberal" thinkers, they're talking about Locke and co. Americans generally mean "social democrat" when they're talking about liberals, and Brits mean something else. In Europe it seems to vary from country to country.

I think all we can do is try to and guess at what the person in the post was trying to say, not arguing against the words they used. Arguing about what is a "real" liberal seems as worthless and childish as a lot of arguments over what constitutes goth, or punk or emo, etc, etc.
