apologies if I gave the wrong impression. perhaps it was my fault for asking the wrong people. if you say it can be done, then I suggest Jenny looks into it a bit more then.

seems you have the world at your hands hope some of my advice was useful, even if the bit ablut corporate sponsorship appeared to be wrong.
on a slightly amusing sidenote, I was tempted to see if one of the internet porn companies would fund a PhD in fiberoptics, perhaps soliton propagation or something. the rationale being that (a) it would generate some publicity for them (b) increased data propagation rates could lead to increased porn download speeds and increased profits for them. I never did try though, since my moral side got the better of me.

I'm only going from a small sample of people and it could turn out to be unrepresentative but from my experience it shouldn't be as much of a problem as you suggested and is certainly worth investigating further.
Having said that, it's surprising that you weren't able to get funding considering the nature of your research so maybe it is harder than i've been led to believe.

The superposition has collapsed; I'm in a funded DPhil eigenstate.

That wasn't a superposition, you're just making things up!

You're right, it's been in a mixed state for a little while now.
I now need to measure the wavefunction in the A&L-CMP basis.

(English translation)
I've been offered a funded place doing something equally exciting in the CMP dept. If funding comes through for the NMR QC thing, I'll do that, otherwise, I'll do organic semiconductor stuff.
