Re: Chav?
Chav is a derogatory slang term in popular usage throughout the UK. It refers to a subculture stereotype of a person who is uneducated, uncultured and prone to antisocial or immoral behaviour. The label is typically, though not exclusively, applied to teenagers and young adults of white working-class or lower-middle class origin. Chav is used for both sexes, where a male chav is sometimes referred to as a chavster and a female as a chavette. ...

Re: Chav?
The term "anti-social" is now misleading and has been tarred by the "ASBO generation" (so David Blunket, i guess) which has spoiled it for 'old-school' anti-social folk who just don't like people and wish to avoid contact with as many of them as possible.

As an oustider, I've so far taken it to mean standard working class citizen of England, unfairly spat upon by upper-class toff nosed brits.

i disagree, i think he has a point. perhaps 'chav' had a specific meaning for a certain group a year or two back but now it seems to be used more and more to describe anyone from a working class background.

Not here, Smudge had it more-or-less spot-on. Possibly because a large proportion of the populace is from a working-class background, or maybe your area is an anomaly.

Re: Chav?
i was thinking more in the way the media have adopted the term and seem to use it at every available opportunity. im afraid i cant really look for examples now, but keep an eye out for how often the term is used now and who it is being used to describe.

Re: Chav?
the_dastardley_chihuahua seems to get me, no-one else does.
let me describe an example, whether it was used jokingly or not. it's obviously hard to picture a chav when you don't live anywhere near one. As such I have to rely on examples in the media. I recall once the mother of character 'Rose' from the new Doctor Who series being described as chavish. There's also been many postings from news articles, musicians etc all also as being described as chavs... yet to me there's nothing particularly brutish or unusual about these people and the generalisation seems to be based almost entirely on the idea of 'hey he sounds and looks kinda funny.. lets call him a chav'.

It's a little more specific/nuanced than that in most cases. The Bangladeshi's in the East End of London are mostly working class, but they're definitely not "chavs". It refers more to tastes in fashion (baseball caps, track suits, other sportswear/jewellery), particular behavioural traits (casual violence, "anti-social behaviour", disdain for intellect or education) and a mode of speaking (which varies from region to region, but often seems heavily influenced by Carribean dialects). So you can be very wealthy (e.g. some celebs) and still be a 'chav'.
It almost always only applies to white people. I've never heard the word chav used to describe a black person for instance (although that might be different in different parts of the country).
However, it's a shit word for the most part, and I try to avoid using it in every day conversation. It gets used more on the internet than other places and I very much doubt the "upper class" use the word much at all.

Re: Chav?
I think the central idea behind being a chav is that you have to wear enough fake gold jewellery to sink a moderately sized island.

my point is that that may have been the original 'definition' of the term 'chav' but now its been adopted by the media and is used to describe pretty much anyone who is white working class.

What on earth is an opinions people? "Well I think the sky's really pretty today". "That might be what you think but I'm of the opinion that god does exist". "You might like chocolate but I prefer giant piles of horse crap for dessert".
If wonder if he'd let you hit him in the face if you said it was your opinion that he was going to get hit in the face soon.

They're something said or done to evoke laughter or amusement, typically an amusing story with a punch line, but that's not important right now.
