Had The Stuarts won the civil war, then I'd wager the world we would live in now would be a lot darker.
After Cromwell won, never again would royal despotism flourish in Britain, and we were the better for it.

Hint: Oliver Cromwell didn't cause The Civil war.
Hint: King Charles I was an ********, and the situation could have been completely avoided were he not such one. He essentially caused the second civil war just by being a duplicitous twat.
See also Nicholas II of Russia, Louis XIV etc for other such monarchical gits.

Also, why are these peonic pop stars in the list, but no Led Zeppelin? They influenced nearly every half decent band after the 70s.

I'm sure there are/were people further right than him. Mosley springs to mind.
In fact, I'm surprised Mosley isn't on the list. To be honest, I'm surprised Stalin isn't on the list, considering some of the people that are.

IMHO Diana (and lennon) being in the top ten, embodies what John Peel said in the orginal BBC program - "Death is the ultimate PR tool"

i would admit that Diana did not do anything spectacular, but she captured Britians hearts for a time. That is something little forgotten. You could include the likes of Queen Elizabeth, the Queen Mother or King George IV. People forget others such as Field Marshal Montgomory or possably General Lord Wellington.
Isabad Kingdom Brunell does deserve to be in the to 20 but not the top ten. He was an acomplished engineer, nothing more.

Brunel was killed in an accident when the driver of his expensive german build horse drawn carriage got slightly tipsy on some sherry and crashed into a fence in Paris and therefore deserves his top 10 place. If he had shagged the son of a crooked lying Egyptian then he would be top 5, no messin

I'vs had this conversation with my wife, we are both in agreement that Diana's place on this list is more to do with presence than any actual greatness.
She think the greatest is Darwin, whereas I believe its Cromwell.
And pls dont bash ole Ironsides unless you actually know anythinng about the man and what he stood for. Fair enough he was a hard man but it was hard times.
Tony Benn is probably one of my idols where politics comes into question, although i dont agree with his socialism.
I am also profoundly disturbed that Benjamin Desraeli is nowhere to be seen. FS doesnt anybody know what he actually did?
Other than that our mathematicians have been given short shrift in this poll. Who can tell me the name of the BRITISH guy who worked number theory to make your e-mail secure?

I think whats really going on is that you are all unwilling to admit that you didn't realize that Diana was (is?) the greatest Brit ever.
You were 'wrong.' Just admit it.

How the hell is a genocial maniac (Cromwell) in the top 10?
The fk laid waste to hundreds of towns and villages in england, ireland scotland and wales.Slaughtered thousands because they were catholic, banned catholicism and introduced a tyrannical reign.
That qualifies him HOW!?

Greatest Britons
If you are not from britain, or even if you are but dont concern yourself with this issue.
Greatest Briton. It's a TV show on BBC. I have but one argument with it. In my view a truly Great Briton would contribute to such things that matter in every day life, such as technology, radical ideas such as the sewer systems by Brunel. The man himself Issac Newton, probably my personal favourite, who contributed what must be the biggest influence on mathematical theories ever, and to this day we rely on them fully.
But one person who appears in the shortlist for top ten is Princess Diana. I am positively sure if she was still alive she wouldnt have made the top ten at all. The case put forward for her to be voted #1 was that she was a great "humanitarian". This she may have been but the only thing that seperated her from those that are truly and more deservedly great humanitarians is that she was famous, and you could say, almost had a duty to do what she did. I have no grudge against Diana as she was a truly great person in the public eye. But it does beg the question "how?"
How can she be rated above people who have made civilisation what it is today, whose life works are much needed to this day and will be used for the foreseeable future and probabaly, beyond.

A better list would be "Top 5 Britons who didnt make the official top 100".

strictly speaking, Charles Babbage came up with the idea of the modern computer about 100 years before Turing. It was only the lame manufacturing techniques of the time that prevented him from realising his goals.
Isaac Newton was just a chief at so many things, revolutionised science, and many of his ideas are still in place today, hundreds of years later.
