Once Again, Fox Is Calling It Early For Bush

I felt it was a bit of a rant/sidetrack from the actual election thread.

How many of us remember from watching Fahrenheit Fox calling Florida early for Bush? Even today, Brit Hume admitted that Fox called it early and would "change procedure" from the 2000 debacle.

In practice, however, this just means they have found another way to do that. By calling Ohio for Bush, without the counting of the provisional votes, Fox has given Bush a 269-242 lead, with four states (Wisconsin, Iowa, Nevada and New Mexico) still undecided. At least one of these states will tip for Bush, and I look forward to Fox calling the election for him shortly.

Contrast this with the BBC coverage. They called Wisconsin for Kerry and Nevada for Bush, with Iowa and New Mexico still open, giving the 254-252 result. Importantly, they recognised the possible outcome of the Ohio provisionals, keeping the state "unclear". The two undecideds are tending towards Bush, giving him a 266-252 lead.

Unlike Fox though, they recognise that the situation in Ohio will not be clear for a long time, with the provisionals not being able to be counted for 11 days, and quite possibly an immense legal battle. As such, they have kept the result unclear. Fox, meanwhile, has handed the state to Bush, disregarding the nature of the result. By treating the state as definitively decided, they have handed the win to Bush.

It is likely that Kerry won't make up enough ground in Ohio to win the election. However, it may well happen, depending on the outcome of the likely legal battle over provisional votes. So once again, we have seen Fox, driven by conservative bias, 'win' and election for Bush.

I agree: Fox called it ridiculously early. However, I preferred the CNN coverage to the BBC - it was a little more prepared to consider the implications of a Bush win, and the impact of the routing of the Democrats in the Senate. The Beeb was better than anticipated, though.

Well what do you expect from Fox?
They probably had to apologise for interrupting their car chases and mindless tat to bring people the election coverage.
So...Fox being biased, Bush is most likely back in the White House, Americans are still self righteous wankers to the rest of the world....the status quo is back.

NBC has also called Ohio for Bush.... the only difference between NBC and FOX is that NBC refuses to cede Bush Nevada which is absurd. With Nevada Bush gets over 269. Also Bush is leading in NM and in IA.

Bush won Kerry lost. Period.

Kerr y lost the swing portion of the state, the so called I4 corridor which goes from Tampa to Daytona Beach and includes Orlando. Basically the republicans got more of their base out in Florida and than the Democrats.

I hope Kerry has the intelligence to conceed as soon as the overwhelming majority of the Ohio votes are in. Unless they discover a huge sack with 150,000 missing Kerry votes in it, then he's lost in Ohio.

Agreed, I can guarantee you that later today Kerry will cede victory to Bush.
Bush won the popular vote by quite a bit and he is up by almost 140k votes in Orlando. There are only about 175k provisional ballots out there and it is hhighly, highly unlikely that they would all go for Kerry.

Anyway, Kerry has conceded the election. It's highly unlikely that Ohio will go to him anyway as Ohio also voted to ban gay marriage and civil unions in a state referendum. Fortunately though, no states were close enough to create the catastrophe of last time. Bush is winning by both electoral and popular vote.

That said, we won't really know who the fking president is for a while yet.

I heard last night that Protestants always vote Republican but traditionally Catholics split their vote. Therefore JBG, you lose (just like the rest of the world)

Ah but the catholics in the US are more moderate than their Protestant counterparts. Also while you think of Protestant as Anglican in the American terms it can also mean bible-bashing praise the lord jesus and kill the gays fundamentalists.

They did not call the state until all ballots were cast. It didn't effect a thing, other than they were the first news service to call the state correctly (and after 80% of the polling areas had reported). But think whatever you want about Fox news. If the democrats think its fox news keeping them from winning, they will never win another election. Which suits me fine.
