So it seems that instead of being forced to pay £85 for an invasion of our privavcy we may now have to pay £300.

I like the idea of ID Cards, not because it is apprently going to solve crime and stop terrorism but because I wouldnt mind having all my details on one card. Purely a convenience thing not a security thing.

I do object to them wanting everyone to have one and charging a stupid price for them. I also object to the way the americans want both countries (UK and US) to use the same system and both have access to eachothers database. That i think is very very wrong.

Also i doubt it will cost £300, thats just the tories being shit (as per usual).

its based on research be LSE, so i do believe the figures, however, the being charged £300 each thing is just the tories talking shit, no change there then, if you look, the actual figure quoted is 18bn over a decade, so i would imagine that the LSE never meant their findings to be applied on a per person basis

And Ste, I think he meant he doesn't pay income tax as he's a student (which I think you knew). I'm not a great tax expert (yet) so I've no idea of this kind of thing is funded from VAT, income tax or what.

Students aren't special. We still pay tax. If we earnt more than the tax-paying threshold then we would pay exactly the same as a non-student.

And afaik all tax goes into one big pot and then distributed.

For example car tax and petrol tax gets used for roads and stuff.
National Insurance gets allocate to particular things etc.
I just don't know where money for ID cards comes from.

They removed that distinction recently and NI payments are now put in with the of the tax income.

Yes but he was just saying that he isn't currently paying towards it not which while obviously not strictly true VAT, which he would pay, makes up a smaller % of the budget than either NI or Income tax which make up just under 50% of the total budget together. So he isn't a significant contributor anyway.

I don't see anything wrong saying there are some things the government shouldn't be funding without objecting to them per se. For example, I have no objection to private money being spent supporting religious organizations, but I would object to public money being used for that purpose.

In returning to the main topic of the news article, the prices seem to have gone up. To quote the bbc
