Martin J. Dürst

Martin joined the W3C Team at Keio-SFC in December 1997 to work on Internationalization. He is now a Visiting Scientist at MIT/LCS. The term Trekkie imbues the spirit of its true fans. Let's face it, it is and always will be the original term assigned to those who enjoy the show. The fact that it has negative affiliations should have no bearing at all and if anything should make it a proud title to wear. Those that do dress in uniform and goto conventions while rattling off various trivia and discussing the inner meaning to it all are the real fans, the ones that are innovating the genre and defying convention.

Thats nonsense, trekkies are the people that get lost in the show. Thats the entire idea of a 'trekkie' someone who who looses sight of whats real and what isn't. Now I'm sure that they understand its a show, but they go so far in their fandom that it's not healthy anymore. I alienate myself from trekkies in the way that I think its not healthy to dedicate my life to a fictional show like that. Does that mean I am against innovation or discussion about the meaning of the things portrayed? Absolutely not, you don't have to be a trekkie to think and talk about the show now do you.

Also, I differentiate myself indeed, that doesn't mean I don't accept the other group, I just don't want to be classified as part of it. See, you might accept retards in general, but if I were to call you one, you'd object and say that you weren't one.
