at the time (1988) Pools of Radiance on a Commodore 64 (heh, a college roommate flunked out of school that year playing it & Might & Magic)
These days - *shrug* - most take too long for me to play, but maybe when the kids get a little older I can start playing them again
edit- just thought of another one -not exactly fantasy rp, but Pirates! by Microprose (pretty sure it was a Sid Meier game) was another great game that year.

If you put myself, armed with an RPG-7, against you, armed with a Mega Drive loaded with 'Rings of Power', I'm pretty sure I know who I'd bet on...

Zelda games are adventure, not RPG.

Why not? They are Games, and you Play a Role in them. Thus making them Role Playing Games.

As you do in almost all games. Which is why the term Role Playing Game needs to be revised.

I always thought that in RPGs you could define the role, which discounts the likes of FInal Fantasy as you are stuck in one role. well there are a few bits you can do in FF7 like go on a date with Barett, but it isn't a big part of the game.

Wasteland and Mars Saga were both pretty damn good, as were the Goldbox series (esp Champions of Krynn).
And ofcourse Baldurs Gate II was a work of genious.
But my fav of all time is still System Shock (the original, though 2 was pretty good as well).

roll playing game refers to the fact that you roll dice (a computer can produce random numbers too, but it was originally referring to pen and paper gfames before computers could do that).
hence why fps's don't count.
duh and stuff.

From my limited experience, Torment just edges out BG2 (partly because Throne of Bhaal was so poor).
2 cents there.

Re: Best RPG ever?
The RPG-27, preferably loaded with the TBG-7V thermobaric rocket warhead is probably the most effective weapon of its class. With the hitting power of a 105 mm artillery shell, this weapon can defeat any known non-reactive armour, and most ceramic/ reactives as well.
Its one-shot disposable nature makes it convenient to carry in small numbers, much like the venerable US LAW, but with significantly more hiting power.
