joining political parties
ive just had a bizzare conversation with a friend who has joined Labour, he turned into some kind of crazy political jehovas (sp?) witness who kept going on and on about how for £3 a month or something i could be in with the 'gang' (i swear to jehova (i cant fcking spell) he said gang)
Now i know that MM is Labour is anyone here part of the hippy loser commune that is the Lib Dems? and although i doubt it since only DM comes within the required age range is anyone Tory??? And question specifically to MM but, why? ok ill pay the £3 fecking quid a month but do you have parties within the party? are there fit women there? what do i get for my membership?
And on a slightly tangential note, has anyone ever been to an MP's constituency 'surgery'? ie that thing they're meant to hold every week to see their constituents? what exactly do people go there for?

The Labour Party is like the Scientologists but without Tom Cruise and John Travolta so it's not all bad

I'll vote Lib Dems in the next election, because I hate Labour, and I honestly couldn't bear to have Derek "Lets build a bloody great museum in a town which has no facilities whatsoever, and could probably do with building some before getting a museum, which noone really wants anyway(apart from trainspotters), and let's build it in the Bad Part of town where all the kids will pillage it" Foster representing me.
The bit in speech marks isn't actually his nickname, but he actually thinks it will be a good idea. I do have is autograph though, which is probably his only redeeming quality.

The "point" of joining a political party is you are supporting them. Your £3 a month (or whatever) goes towards publicity, campaigns, etc. Presumably you believe the message, and you want this message to be spread as widely as possible.
It's also a social thing for a lot of people. You meet like-minded people who aren't bored by your particular view on XYZ. In fact, they like, shock *discussing* things. This is then combined with less of the futility of on-line discussions, since you actually (ocassionally) go and do things.
I'm not a member of any political party, but I have been a "supporter" of the Communist Party of Great Britain in the past. I didn't have a membership fee per se, but my donations went towards building the party newspaper (The Weekly Worker), increasing literature (book publishing, etc) and also towards candidacy costs.
I've also leafleted for the Socialist Labour Party - but that was back in the May '97 elections. As mornings go, standing outside a tube station in Brent isn't the best ever, but you feel you're at least doing something.

I lean Democrat, and support the 'Anyone But Bush 2004' campaign (1st one I'll be old enough to vote for), but I have no intentions of ever officially joining a party. They're all wrong some of the time.

I didn't think MM was a card-carrying member or anything. It's like "sponsoring" a poor child from the third world or "joining" the RSPCA: you spend a small amount of money on something you agree with somewhat and in return get regular information about the cause and some karma. It doesn't mean you have to abandon your individuality and prepare to die for your party.
If this is gonna be a straight politics thread, I would have voted lib dem last election if I wasn't asleep. If I was American I'd probably support Kucinich for 2004. I've occasionally argued about the role of government and policies and so on in real life but I don't think small amateur efforts are worth the time.

I'd vote libertarian if they carried any weight at all, but seeing as how that isn't the case, I'll probably be voting for Dean, since he most likely will win the primaries. At least it seems that way as of now. But I'll definately be voting Democrat this time around.

Kucinich would not get past the primary if the top eight democrats in the field all died in bizarre and unrelated escaped-zoo-animal accidents. The Dems would throw in Walter Mondale or someone to 'lose with dignity' (I'm not kidding at any point so far).
And I can't vote for him in the primary anyway cause I'm a registered republican.
But the fact that you are 'aware' of him impresses me, as that puts you over 95% of Americans.

Do you pay $3 a year to get invited to secret parties with complicated handshakes and illegal space aliens?

we don't have to pay anything.
the republicans that go to those meetings wouldn't want to dirty themselves by shaking hands with the likes of me ("he look kind of like poor!").
and 'publicans are the ones always fighting to keep illegal aliens down.

This is one of my dad's favoritest simpson's lines of all time:

force you to vote Democratic, but deep down inside you secretly
long for a cold-hearted Republican to lower taxes, brutalize
criminals, and rule you like a king. "

but i don't see the part in that episode about republicans and aliens:/

The local Republicans are underground and about to welcome a water cooler as leader. Among their numbers are Mr. Burns, the Arnold Scwarzenegger type guy and Dr. Hibert and I think they have an alien there too. My memory ain't perfect though.
And that is a quote.

May I ask why, considering that party's history, and the things it still believes in?
It seems a slightly 'dodgy' choice for anybody to be involved with, let alone you, who I had down as a sort of distinctly non-Leninist type.

Your friend sounds a bit strange, but he is right in his general thrust. It is immensly rewarding to know that you are part of a group operation that comprises people who share the same values and general scope on life as you do, working towards a common goal.

Well, I presume you want join because you share a broadly Socialist/Social Democratic ethos.
Personally, I have only been a member for about a year, and I haven't had any time since to settle into any local events.
And yes, there are young Labour things and all that, and they (presumably) have fit women.

To talk to the said MP about the issues, both local and national.
