Other than the front window getting smashed up, it looks like most of the damage is superficial.

Having said that, it was a pretty good decision to return before the damage got beyond the point of superficiality.

A few dents?
Look closer at those pics... at some places there are cracks in the sheet metal.
I agree that a plane should be able to take a bit of a battering, but this isn't quite normal.
A bit too much of a battering and one of those hailstones can take out a blade from the engine. Then you're in trouble (ie: blade ripping engine open, debris damaging other parts of the plane)

a few years back my town got hit with golfball sized hail. Caused rather a lot of damage. There are hailstorms on record that have produced grapefruit and larger stones.

Hail can be evil.
