WASHINGTON - U.S. officials said Monday that they'll lodge a formal protest after four North Korean fighter jets intercepted a U.S. reconnaissance plane in international airspace.

The Pentagon says the incident happened during the weekend over the Sea of Japan.
A Pentagon spokesperson, Lt.-Cmdr. Jeff Davis, says the MiG-29 fighters shadowed the American RC-135S plane for about 20 minutes.
He says one of the North Korean jets used its radar in a way that indicated it might attack, but no shots were fired.
Davis says the reconnaissance plane was on a routine mission at the time. He says he doesn't know if there was any communication between the Koreans and the American crew.
The incident comes at a time of increased tension between the U.S. and North Korea over the Korean nuclear program.
Davis says it was the first incident of its kind since August 1969, when a North Korean jet shot down an American surveillance plane, killing 31 people.
