My siggy
I know the rules but give me a break here guys, it was Orcish for God's sake! It's not as if Tolkein included swear words in his vocabulary or anything. And several people have pointed out what it means (one ring to rule them all etc) cos it's all over the films so it's not like billions of people round the world don't know it.
Lemme have my siggy back, please

Was going to comment that it wasn't even changed to English... But seems "ta" is an English word after all... (Only just...)
ta ( P ) Pronunciation Key (tä)
interj. Chiefly British
Baby-talk alteration of thank you.
Still, the lack of capitalization and punctuation hurts people's eyes, so the censorship should still be censored.

this english only thing is getting lame, its not as if there creating threads which arent english.
I'm all or english only thread, if you dont enforce that the boards would become a multi-lingual mess. But a sig should be allowed surely? The tfd thread is ok ffs.

I'm actually eagerly waiting for Mudshome or JBoy comment on this one. The fact is, my sig has been censored due to the fact that I had Finnish in it (HOW EVIL I HAD A QUOTE OF A SONG), wich wasn't closely offending, actually, quite far from it.
Now, if we MAY type imaginary languages (such as Tolkien Orcish) on our signatures, why not real languages? If real ones are banned, but imaginary ones aren't, I can sure fire for Elvish myself (as a member of the Tolkien society around here).
Yet, what makes the difference - to an average person who doesn't speak, say Finnish - between Finnish and Orcish? For a non-speaking person?
Now, No speaking about why I want Finnish in my sig (yes, I am patriotic), because it's a bigger chance that someone actually understands it than on Orcish.
FLUFFS.

It's a fictional language - There should be an exception in this case.
Also considering how much time and effort J.R.R Tolkien put into the different languages of his Middle Earth, I don't see why Gayle shouldn't be allowed to honor Tolkien's work by using these lines as his signatur. I for one noticed it for what it was, in another thread, and pointed out that everybody should know what that means.
About 100 % of the posters here on this forum must have seen LOTR the movie, a number just abit less might also have read the book, and then ofc. there's the people inhere who actually studied abit of Tolkiens language works, because well - It's amazing.
Again, the nature of this language being the mind of an English lingustic profess0r, I don't see why is should bother you.
In fact; to show I support Gayle in this, and because I can, I'll change my signature into an Elvish phrase.
Nai Valaraukar tye-mátar!
I've chosen an Elvish dialect called "Quenya", which is one of the most complicated and advanced languages Tolkien wrote for his Middle Earth. Directly translated, It means "May Balrogs Eat You!"

Even if people have seen the movie they don't necessarily know Orcish nor other Tolkien's languages. A good example would be me, as I've seen the movie, read MOST of Tolkien's books several times and done alot of research and essays on Tolkien's literature (well, ME, not the other fairy tales). Yet, I wouldn't know what the Orcish stuff means, as I only know some Sindarin (the wood elves' language) and some Quenya (Noldor, as mentioned above I believe)
Now, if this'll be a growing trend here, I'll go write a ten-line poem on Elvish (Noldor's Quenya, or the second Elven language Sindarin.). Then you alot can go run around googling on what it means.

I did it to underline my statement; You're doing it to be cross.
But well, Good luck on your elvish poem, I for one were not very succesfull when I tried to write a elvish poem. You might just want to shorten it abit, I think there's something about a signature limit. Also, I don't see why you just keep the signature you have, considering that makes no sense to me what so ever, So I guess that's as good as any, yes ?

Well, Christian, I consider trying to make own Elvish poem too a bit tough, considering I'm no poet, but I think I can go quote something from The Unfinished tales or The Book of Lost Tales.
That oughta do it. And the signature 'limit' is ten lines, so that's why I chose it. I'm crossing cause I feel it grossly unfair that people's sigs are treated on different levels of respect here.
And what comes to keeping my current signature, it's not made by ME, and it's there as a silent protest against censoring my Finnish signature. If you feel it makes no sense, go ask Kurashima (Aka. Mudshome) for what it means, as it's obviously his makings. It's not as good as any.

You could also just dust of your old signature and use that, because below these lines there is an argument that should allow you to use it.
I've just discovered (or re-discovered really) that many people use latin in their signatures, since latin is a real language, and people apparently can use that with-out any problems, why shouldn't other languages, nonfictional or fictual, not be allowed to be used ?
I mean, as long as it isn't anything offensive, or isn't spoken in the threads. What's the problem ?

Did anybody see Frasier the other night.
it was a new one on C4.
It was the one where he said a speech during his sons Bar Mitzvah to celebrate it.
He wanted to learn to say it in Jewish and ended up saying it in Klingon due to the person who taught him it being angry with him.
It was very funny. Heh.

Latin isn't allowed. According to Kura.
Thus, if you notice a person with Latin in his/her sig, the right thing to do would be to report to a moderator. How I see it. As it comes to treating all GDers and other Forum users equally (I feel that as my signature, Finnish, was edited due it was 'Non-English, non-Geek' language, all others that fit the description deserve, in all fairness, be edited).
edit. forgot one code. Hmpf.

It's the same with my sig, it's the most repeated phrase in the entire film trilogy (and the 13 part BBC radio series where I originally heard it) on top of being in the books which a vast number of people have seen/read/heard. As such it's pretty much irrelevant which language you speak as there's still a good chance you'll recognise it.
That's my take on things anyway.

I see Kura's point, I however don't agree with it. But I don't think theres anything to be done about it.
Maybe this should be decided by a poll ?

Gayle, I would claim that no Orcish is commonly known. If you claim so, I can as well say the Quenya in my signature is commonly known, as the Elvish crew of Tolkiensociety, me, and Christian likely understand it. I didn't know what 'Victore te Salutant' means when I started playing PA, and even if an average Finn speaks three to four languages, rare would know.
Dunno about 'Geeks' then.
I used to know what it means, but I've long forgotten. 100% of the Finnish posters in the forums also understand what my sig (was Finnish) ment. OBVIOUSLY. Likely, the amount is roughly the same that knows what Vts means.
Maybe it's the most repeated phrase. But in my DVD verse of tLotR 1, there's no text line (we have those little lines of text in movies in Finland, we don't speak them over) to read it from. One'll have to catch it from the movie. I've seen it more times than I can count (okay, four or five), and I yet didn't know what your signature ment when I first read it.
Taking, I am a member of Finnish Tolkien Society, and know tad mroe about Tolkien and his linguistics than a casual viewer (I doubt my bro would link the stuff in your Sig to tLotr - he has seen the movie twice, but not read the book).
To set a few examples.
And Christian, I think it has been decided already. And I'm fine with it. I can use Quenya or Sindarin myself.

Now I feel extremely offended.
VERY OFFENDED.
Equal treatment, eh?

I think ive done more than enough polls lately. Every new one i put up gets me large amounts of grief, none of which i expect or appreciate.
Ask JBOY or Karm or JJ or someone. Im just a peon around here.

Alright, so the outcome of this thread is that we now have 3 people with tolkien languaged signatures and Gayle got to keep his signature.
Lovely.
Im gonna start putting up with the rules, and stop argumenting about why we should be allowed to have our own language in our signature, because it simply ain't getting anywhere. Also, my purpose in my first post in this thread was to let Gayle keep his signature, that seems to be fixed now.
Since I've told everybody what my signature means, I guess that's commenly known to every reader of this forum, and therefore I should be able to use it.
EDIT: Guess not. My signature just got 0wnd.
