Anyways, imagine you have an enormous amount of data, the contents of the entire internet perhaps. Now, imagine if each letter or number was assigned a two digit code. 'A' could be 00, 'B' 01, etc etc. This enormous amount of information would be converted into an extremly long number, like 0.001004050140, except to millions and millions of places past the decimal. Now, imagine if that number was a position etched onto a magic rod. Assuming that the exact midpoint of the rod was 0.5, the aforementioned number would be somewheres between 0.0 and 0.1, and could be intrepreted and translated back into data at a later date, and the entirity of human knowledge would be contained in a half inch line.
Another classic is the one also discussed here previously. The idea of filling a 640x480, 16 million color image with every single possible combination of pixels. This would theoretically output every single picture, movie (in individual frames), piece of writing, that ever existed, or ever will exist

If the stick was several billion molecules long and you could only choose one place to cut that's only 30 or so bits. The second idea is a tautology.

If by magic you mean a certain type of manual performing arts, then your stick wouldn't have any superphysical properties.

I don't, but if you're hypothesising about a magic stick, and by magic stick you mean the stick of a real-world magician, you can't ignore molecular theory or you're just talking nonsense.

I've been making that point over and over the last century. Integer enumerable data is _small_. No matter how much you have of it. And Cantor was a genius.

I posted a thread long, long ago where I warned against computing pi in binary.
Basically, the laws of statistics state that eventually, the combination of 0's and 1's would eventually ouptut every copyrighted and non copyrighted work known to man.

Bear in mind that it's not possible, assuming it was a 'magic' rod, because of the limit of the planck length, and quantised space.

And you think this is somehow the origin of the left/right hand paths?
Now I'm genuinely amused

that's the only place i remember it from. other books etc?
most go with light/dark or good/evil etc.
ps: google is giving me a tradition from western occultism.
'apparently' i am behind on my wicca magicks
but they give right hand as being good and in lone wolf right hand was for the servants of the darklords
now i have no clue where satan lies.

No-one's entirely sure of the origin as far as I know, one of the main theories is that it derives from the gospel according to Matthew...
Quote:
And he shall set the sheep on his right hand, but the goats on the left hand.

The left hand path is traditionally the choice of the self centred occultist/magician, usually seen as the path of evil (satanism etc). The right hand path is the path of the 'white magician', the selfless practitioner of 'magyck'. The terms have been floating around certainly for some hundreds of years but they only really entered general usage during the time of Alesteir Crowley.

Ah, but that's not the same type of 'stupidity'. Just look at Cliff Yablonski or Leonard J. Crabs, they're definitely 'stupid', but in an amusing way. What I meant are the honestly annoying, shitty, 'obvious' gimmicks (that were created for the sole purpose of pissing people off, not amusing them) which can be regularly seen on internet forums.

I don't know what's more funny;
An anoying gimmick or the anoyed peoples responses.
Getting upset over something so trivial should be nominated to 'something'. Espesially since it's anger directed against a combiantion of pixles viewd on a screen.

Actually, it's not just that. In most cases people also fail to recognize an obvious gimmick for what it is even if other posters tell them about it several times.
I still have some 'GIMMICK ACCOUNT' threads saved to disk somewhere and I weep for humanity every time I skim through them.
