Preferences -> Multimedia -> uncheck "enable sounds in webpages" gets rid of embedded midi, but youll still hear the sound from the flash banners. You'll probably have to disable Flash plugins entirely, or use a clientside proxy to remove swf links from pages on the pa domain.

is it the Hitman ad? 'cos i was just looking at the 'Games Games Games' thread which had that ad displayed and had a very weird sound coming from my speakers which stopped when i closed the browser. is it that or is there something wrong with my computer? it really freaked my out

Norton internet security and Zone Alarm pro both block ads. That and blocking jolt's ad server in your hosts file will do it nicely as well.

heh funny part is that most research shows that banner are often a poor investment and that banners with sound are a complete waste of money and negatively impact both the site it's on and the product it advertises.

It's just a plain text file. At the bottom, add a line reading

127.0.0.1 www.adserver.jolt.co.uk

That'll redirect all requests to www.adserver.jolt.co.uk to your own machine, hence blocking the ad. Doesn't work for all of them but I've still not seen this flash one yet.
