Solution: removing popups and banners

The hard way? Not really....

Windows has a file put deeply away that keeps track of host names. With this file you can have certain addresses/hostnames point to a certain IP. With this you can remove adds or annoying services from a particular vendor. The file is called "hosts" in the folder "system32\drivers\etc"

I'm running Windows2000, but win9x and XP probably have the same file around

EXAMPLE:
Quote:
# Copyright (c) 1993-1999 Microsoft Corp.
#
# This is a sample HOSTS file used by Microsoft TCP/IP for Windows.
#
# This file contains the mappings of IP addresses to host names. Each
# entry should be kept on an individual line. The IP address should
# be placed in the first column followed by the corresponding host name.
# The IP address and the host name should be separated by at least one
# space.
#
# Additionally, comments (such as these) may be inserted on individual
# lines or following the machine name denoted by a '#' symbol.
#
# For example:
#
# 102.54.94.97 rhino.acme.com # source server
# 38.25.63.10 x.acme.com # x client host

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.0.1 www.gator.co.uk
127.0.0.1 www.gator.com
127.0.0.1 www.gator.net
127.0.0.1 www.Bonzi.com
This "removes" banners from gator and bonzi. I recon this can be done with all kind of hosts.

The location of this file is:
E:\WINNT\system32\drivers\etc
Name of the file is:
hosts (no extension)

it can be eddited with notepad.

Information source:
Tweakers.net (Dutch)

have fun

Alternatively you can use 0.0.0.0, which is slightly faster.
Those of you who are very clever (like me!) can set up a webserver of your choice, with a custom error handler document (all ads will show a 404 if you have a webserver installed, and a "Could not find server" if it isnt), to show a nice small gif or jpg. This will stop some of the annoying things that browsers do with frames/iframes that dont load.

Here is a more comprehensive set of sites :
In 0.0.0.0 form - http://www.smartin-designs.com/downloads/full_0000.txt

In 127.0.0.1 form - http://www.smartin-designs.com/downl...ull_127001.txt

May I add to that that it IS NOT RECOMMENDABLE to put all those hosts in your list while your brother is heavilly browsing the internet......
It resulted in my XP1700+ being at a constant 100% processor usage.

I prefer to use junkbuster - although they recommend people without prior experience use some other piece of software that is supposed to be easier to use.

i use pow.. you have to manually add all the popups (double click affair) so i dont miss anything. amazingly, almost all popups are killed these days.

I use a free jobby called Killad - it's written in assembler so it's very fast and has a small footprint.
Sounds like it does exactly what pow does (you add the popups manually, by host or by window name).
Obviously this doesn't stop banners, but I'm more or less able to "skim" them to the extent that I don't really notice them any more.

Using the hosts file is fine for a few sites but where there's hundreds of sites to check it can, as SI said, eat your system resources.

I actually use nopopie, which seems to be very good, but the authors site is down, and has been, down for quite a while.

If I was to go down the hosts file, I would stick them into my nameserver - much faster.

I just let them show....if I am visiting a site its normally one I visit alot and if thats the case they deserve the cash they get from the popups. After all I dont want sites I like to shut down.

Only time I turn a blocker on is when i'm trying to find a crack for a peice of software as most of those sites enjoy sending you to porn sites which then starts an endless loop of popups. When i do this i just use the popup blocker in Twaek XP which works fine

You are not allowed to add "127.0.0.1 www.jolt.co.uk" to your HOSTS file!

JJ will track you down if you do!

No wait... seriously? Did he tell you that? (I guess he can check the amount of hits on the banner from here)

Not that I did that ofcourse, I can live with that banner, but I'm just wondering if JJ is really concerned about that.

Sorry for the spammage...

Here is mine. Works pretty good, and is compact yet extensive (compared to other ones I've seen). I got most of the entries off my KaZZa-Lite install host file, though I added a few to it. Copy and paste this into your hosts file, and say good bye to ads :-)
