Comparing perl and php is wrong. They got different uses.

To answer your question: yes, perl is old.
But no, it doesn't make it bad. I still love perl, and use it quiet a lot.

perl for websites is harder to get to grips with.

Perl isnt as old as C.

Plus its getting close to version 6, which should be very interesting. I read somewhere that over half the perl documentation is devoted to embedding perl into other things, you dont see many embedded PHP systems.

Perl and PHP are two different languages for two different purposes. Perl is a general language to handle text and other data, with a very flexible syntax. PHP is a language for webdevelopers new to programming, it is designed to be much more simple than perl, without all the data structure handling, and with a more uniform syntax.
