[UK] NTL finally does something decent
http://www.theregister.co.uk/2004/11/03/ntl_q3_04/
300Kb service to become 1Mb
750Kb service to become 2Mb
1Mb service to become 3Mb
And prices will NOT be rising!
In the words of a well-known lycra-clad sidekick, "holy cow, batman!".
Now the catch:
While new users get this free, existing customers must pay a £25 fee - but screw it, I'll happily pay £25 to go from my current 300Kb to 1Mb.
Also, the upgrade takes place in the first 3 months of next year.

Re: [UK] NTL finally does something decent
I signed up for 150k at home thinking it was a decent price. With that i got 2 free months at 1mb and by the time that free trial was over the 150k had been upgraded to 300k.
NTL have been pretty ace with me .

Re: [UK] NTL finally does something decent
Basicly unless you sit there maxing your connection all month they let you get on with it.
If they get more than a couple of people in one contention group constantly maxing their connectinos they'll warn you, because it drags down everyone else in the group. The bandwidth they offer, especially the higher bandwidth, is based on everyone in the contention group not thrashing it at the same time.

Why do NTL have round numbers, not 2^n numbers?!

Telewest started doubling services ages ago, although I will agree this is a better offer.
Is NTL cable based or does it come through your phoneline with microfilters etc?

Re: [UK] NTL finally does something decent
It's fibre-optic cable (so always on, no dialing up like ADSL).
However, they announced a while ago it was too expensive to carry on digging up roads to extend the cable network, so for areas outside of their optical cable range they'll be offering ADSL. How and if they intend to apply this offer to ADSL remains to be seen.

so, what's the point of the faster lines? if you're not going to be hammering them all the time, you might as well pay less... lets face it, people only want higher bandwidth connections so they can download warez

5GB on the 1Mb? what a bunch of fags.
You can download 5GB in just under 12 hours at that speed.

That doesn't surprise me, I've been saying for over 2 years that NTL and BT and the likes were including small print to allow them to limit your monthly download rates.

Re: [UK] NTL finally does something decent
As far as i know they cant actually locate which people are downloading what anyway. I had this discussion with my comp sci house mate back in 2nd year when they first introduced a limit. He was adamant they cant actually do anything abot it, and we downloaded way over the limit month after month without ever getting a waning.
Unless they've changed things the limit is effectively not there.

Re: [UK] NTL finally does something decent
There is a £25 transfer charge for current customers, and..well..other problems.
For example those customers who are on silver (750k) and want to go up to the 2 Mbit , and they are still using the Pace DTV 1000-4000 Series boxes, they will have to be replaced with a Samsung Box, or a Cable Modem. 3Mbit works fine on all hardware really, in fact we were bored and unlocked a test one to 40mbit, worked fine albeit a little hot.
I have not heard anything personally about upload increasing any, but if I do you will know.

Re: [UK] NTL finally does something decent
Hmmm....we are having trouble currently with BT saying it will take another 3 weeks before they can give us a phone line to then install ADSL onto, but the house is also wired up for ntl. This is of great interest. Especially since we want as fast a connection as we can have because
1) there are 5 of us in the house, and we are all nerds
2) one of those 5 is Mark and he will hog all available bandwidth constantly to download tat.
But I have a question. I know people have mentioned that they dont really enforce the download limit. If for some reason they should would we still be stuck in the contract? Obviously if they did pick up on the enormous quantities we were downloading then we would want to move to a supplier who didnt mind, and being stuck in due to the ntl contract would be very annoying. This may be answered in all the blurb, but I dont get a great deal of online time at present (only during my breaks at work - where they let me do what I want with the computer thankfully, although so can anyone else, so its spyware/adware riddled) so anyone with the time and inclanation to do the investigation for me would be thanked profusely (and if youre in our area you might even get a drink sometime)

i believe they cancel your contract if you constantly break it, ie get noticed as being constantly over using

Before they even think about cutting you off they are supposed to give you a warning. I've never heard of anyone getting one.
The usual NTL contract is 12 months, but if you are students you can get a 9 month one. I'm not sure what they would do if you broke the agreement by going over the limit continuously, they might force you to pay off the rest of the contract as well as disconnecting your service.

Re: [UK] NTL finally does something decent
The 12 month part wouldnt worry us overly (we have a 12 month tenancy in the house, it would probably be about a month over but we wouldnt mind that) its just the thought of being stuck if they did enforce the download limit as I am sure we would constantly be over it with 5 people using 8 computers over a single connection. The 3Gb is quite tempting, we had discounted ntl before as they were about the same price for a slower connection speed, but if they will be faster then they may be worthy of further consideration.
It would also mean I could get cable TV, which I'd like. No-one else seems interested though.

Re: [UK] NTL finally does something decent
To be honest, whether they care about the limits probably depends on how used your area is, bandwidth wise. When the utilisation is constantly high in an area they tend to investigate. If they didn't have any reported problems I doubt they care.

NTL: Offer a 9 Month Contract for Students, you can always just expand it a couple of months.
E; FB: Aww well, I can be specific about it, you can get the phoneline, the analouge TV box, and a phoneline. For Credit Control Reasons you cannot get a Digital box.

We probably will be, after discussions last night we are too scared of the limit being enforced to risk it, so we will keep waiting for the BT line (grr, sassn frassn useless BT) and then get a nildram 2Mb ADSL.
PS, Re the 9 month credit control thingy, that shouldnt be a problem for us as none of us are actually students. We are just living like students in a student house, but we all have crappy jobs.

Sure thing
http://www.home.ntl.com/page/userpolicy
Section 2 -
Quote:
ntl: home's broadband and dial-up services are intended for normal recreational or educational use by individuals and families and our pricing and network architecture have been designed accordingly. Customers who use the services more heavily than a normal home user will reduce the performance of the network for other customers.
"Normal use" of the service is defined as up to 1 gigabyte downstream of data transfer daily (which equates to approximately 200 music tracks, 650 short videos, 10,000 pictures or around 100 large software programmes downloaded per day).

As I said, theres 5 of us there, and we all use the net a lot, and there is Mark who will use any remaining bandwidth to download tat. He still has 90Gb of his hard disks to fill.

1 GB per day is a lot. seriously a lot. there are 6 people here, and it rarely goes over. and about that "90 GB" to fill. I have filled a hell of a lot myself. 1GB is difficult

Re: [UK] NTL finally does something decent
You clearly dont know just how much rubbish Mark downloads. And the 90Gb to fill is out of over 700Gb I think.... there are over 300Gb of films alone, not including shorter videos (episodes of a series for example, of which he has complete sets of a lot of things), animated things and music.
And thats just on his computer, to say nothing of the other 7 in the house.
