I think that a move towards more realtime interaction would be good for the game. The majority of changes take effect at the tick, but cov ops, scanning, (self-)exiling, napping, joining/leaving alliances can, and in some casest must, be done between ticks. For some of these, there are some realtime effects (naps show up on the public page, bankhacking gives resources, etc)
Without too much work, many other things could also be done in realtime, such as research, constructions, governments, mining, initiating, and probably others.
Those are changes that go beyond a simple bug fix though.
