Stop saying 'we' when discussing achievements by groups of people that didnt involve
you in any way.
this applies to football fans, citizens of country X, would-be members of the scientific community, space nerds, and just about every other group of stupid faggots on the internet.
'We' didnt win the FA cup, 'we' didnt land on mars, 'we' didnt discover subatomic particles, 'we' wont be competing in the olympics next year, and 'we' certainly didnt defeat another country in war.
Shut up.

Re: Stop saying 'we' when discussing achievements by groups of people that didnt involve
I hate to disagree with the venerable Gordon of Ross, but...
How many football teams would win anything bar non-league games if they had no fans?
How many wars (in the modern world) would even be fought, let alone won by a country that had zero economy?
Obviously when people say 'we won WWI' that doesn't really make a lot of sense since the majority of people who say it won't have been alive at the time.

Its always irritated me but I used to think it was just dumb sports fans who said it, but now the whole mars thing has taken it to a new level.

Re: Stop saying 'we' when discussing achievements by groups of people that didnt involve
that might be okay for sports teams, especially for people who only watch 'their' team on television,
but for the mars landing, especially in a (pseudo)democracy, it was paid for by the people, and it was the (pseudo)decision of the people to do it. and we 'did' it.

What if you're unsure if you made a contribution or not?
I mean, I pay taxes some of which probably ends up on some sort of scientific research. If "they" cure cancer, can I claim the credit?

Only in the sense that African slaves could claim credit for the success of America.
And if youre wanting to take credit for the cure for cancer because your tax funded it, you're also going to have to take the blame for Iraq and the welfare state.

Re: Stop saying 'we' when discussing achievements by groups of people that didnt involve
A certain language (I forget which) actually has two different forms of the word "we", one to include groups you were specifically a part of, one to include groups with which you formed a mutual identity in certain aspects. Sux that it's not english tho

Re: Stop saying 'we' when discussing achievements by groups of people that didnt involve
Actually it's perfectly acceptable to use "we", except in a place where you were completely unrelated.
Say, for instance, Britain did something in Iraq, I would use the term "we helped".
But if it was the Yanks, I wouldn't say "we helped", simply because I'm not from America.
It depends on the context. On a global scale, like landing on Mars, you're permitted to say "we". On a national scale, as in something your country does (like say, win the World Cup), you can say "we".
Anyway, we think you're an idiot Nodrog. When I say "we", I mean myself. And I'm sure I can find someone with no hassle who agrees, so it's that person and myself. K?

Well, yes. I think it'd be fairly accurate for the actual slaves to say they contributed to the wealth/success of America.

OK. Well there is some evidence of donkeys being used on American farms. American agriculture was obviously important in the growth/development of America.
I'm not sure the same could be said for the dodo, although I'm happy to hear evidence to the contrary.
