Re: So I am writing a "book"
I suggested the romans, because I don't trust the ancient greeks with steam powered ramming devices.

The only one i'm aware of as being close is 'fireball' by John Christopher, in which several historical groups such as the romans, vikings and aztecs suvive into the present day in a parellel dimention.

Roma Eterna series by Robert Silverberg. Never read any of them myself, just a short story in a sci-fi collection I bought once.

Re: So I am writing a "book"
If Matrix Revolutions has taught us anything, it's that your book should focus on around 25 different characters (heroes if you will). They should have very little connection, and you should swap randomly between them. Also try to ignore any issue of timescale, as I'm sure people will figure it out anyway.

Yes, try to explain the origin and the creation of every single type of weapon, and have the characters discuss this information on a regular basis to keep the readers intrigued.
