Iran have a new president
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/world/mid...st/4621249.stm
What I don't understand is:
Quote:
The US said the election was "flawed" and described it as "out of step" with regional trends towards democracy.
|
Flawed because the election didn't go the way the US would have wanted?
We had fraud in the elections in the UK and surely there couldn't be enough to get 62% of the vote?

Re: Iran have a new president
if the us doesnt like the result ofc its 'flawed'. if anyone knows who should a country its the government of the US, thats what democracy is all about, isnt it? i mean, look at the middle east, the US is doing its very best to transform it into stronghold of democracy and bring the poor, backward people to the light and the people of iran dare doing something like this !!
ok, so they had some more or less fair elections, but what does it matter, if the wrong guy wins?

Re: Iran have a new president
The United States is the paradigm of democracy (as well as being the land of the free and the home of the brave, obviously), so it makes sense to define democracy as "what the people of the United States want to happen". The peoples of other countries, not being as democratically minded as the citizens of the United States, can't really be allowed to make decisions for themselves as they don't really know what they want or what's best for them.

UK Foreign Secretary Jack Straw said there were "serious deficiencies" in the election, noting that many reformists, and all women candidates, had been barred from standing.

Re: Iran have a new president
That happens every time Iran has an election. In fact, that's how the process is controlled; the vote as a whole doesn't need to be rigged, because the Mullahs have already decided on the range of candidates that will be on offer. They ultimately win, regardless of whether a 'reformer' is elected, or not.

Imagine they elected a hamster as president. You would have to ask - "So who owns the hamster".

Just as an aside, if you get your gas and electricity from the same supplier you can usually get a "Dual Fuel" discount.

And just because the UK agrees doesn't make them right either. Now if Germany and France agree...

Democracy is shit anyways, we need to select absolute leaders American Idol style. Or maybe have a Big Brother television series show down, and whoever wins get's to be Big Brother.

well yes and no, the iranian hierarchy is a little confusing
http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/shared/spl/h...ml/default.stm
but an iranian i once talked to suggested that the 'mullah' angle was sometimes overplayed in the west, obviously the set up is there to ensure no counter revolution takes place, but from the perspective of the iranians theres actually a quite a bit of choice and subtle politics behind the scenes. Its not something i agree with or would want to live under but the candidates weren't all 'pro mullah' the iranian public seem to have chosen someone who may deliver economic prosperity at the sake of reforms that haven't really got them anywhere with the current president.

1/3 of Irans border is to Russia, 1/3 to the US.
Wanting to have nuclear weapons isn't crazy, it's perfectly understandable.

In saying that whilst we may wish to express solidarity with nations who stand against US hegemony, we should recall that Iran is not a great place to live for many many reasons and that we don't want any more nukes in the world. I am n t saying the US has any right to nukes and frankly as no right to complain, it is a bad situaiton but its not one that is going to be solved by even more opportunities for death and destruction.
|
then what? destroy all nukes of all countries? yes, that would be nice, but highly unlikely. if iran should ever build nuclear weapons i think its highly unlikly that they will ever use them unless they are attacked. parkistan and india are more dangerous and they already have these weapons.

Yes, Iran is a wonderful place. Maybe you should lobby to import a few thousand mullahs and tlurn your country over to them. Disband all corporations. Confiscate all personal wealth and throw away all arms. After you've tried it for awhile drop us a note and let us know how it went and we'll look into following suit. Check with your wife, girlfriend or mother and see if they would like to have a right wing Islamic government. Post their answer.

hehe, indeed. the Best thing Saddam Hussein could have done was start a WMD program and then abandon it. then he wouldn't be in his pants on the front of The Sun.

Re: Iran have a new president
At least he's honest.
http://www.theaustralian.news.com.au...5E7583,00.html
Ahmadinejad describes himself as a fundamentalist, has no qualms about asserting that there can be no democracy in Islam, rejects free-market economics, and insists on "religious duties" rather than human rights. This clarity will, in the medium term, help the people of Iran understand the choices involved. They will learn that they cannot have an Islamist system together with the goodies that the modern world offers in both material and spiritual terms.
