cover versions
As some of you may already know, i have a thing for cover versions. I'm not even sure why, i just love hearing different interpretations of songs.
I have just added to my playlist:
Siouxie and the banshees - dear prudence
Manic st preachers - raindrops keep falling on my head
Deftones - no ordinary love
johnny cash - hurt
china drum - wuthering heights
rem - first we take manhattan
I have a ton of other covers, but these are probably my favourites (or at least, the first that come to mind), but if anyone can recommend any others to me, please do.
Also, if anyone can tell me who did the cover of jefferson airplane's 'white rabbit' that i heard recently I'd be eternally grateful.....from googling i can see its been covered a load of times, and i have no idea which one i heard....it was in a movie (but i can't remember which), and it was with a female kinda gothy sounding vocalist.

Re: cover versions
I'm fond of the NOFX covers of 'Vincent', 'All of Me', 'Electricity' and 'Les Champs Elysees'.
Also recently I've been playing Johnny Cash - 'Personal Jesus' a little too often. Historically I've always liked Radiohead's 'Nobody Does it Better' but most others seem to dislike it.
There are tonnes of others, especially as I like Me First and the Gimme Gimmes who only do covers.

Re: cover versions
A skim through my playlist gives me Big Black's cover of "Heartbeat", Husker Du's cover of "Eight Miles High" and, winning the prize for oddest cover, Cake's cover of "I Will Survive".
Oh, and HIM's cover of "Don't fear the Reaper".

The man who sold the world by Nirvana, and 99 Red Balloons by Goldfinger. I also like Whiskey in the jar by Metallica, but I actually didn't hear the original, so can't comment on that one (I didn't even know it was a cover).

Re: cover versions
I can only think of two covers that are seriously better than the originals; They're Coming to Take Me Away by NeuroticFish, and This Wheel's On Fire by Siouxsie and the Banshees.
96% of covers are completely banal rubbish, usually brought into being based on a combination of artistic bankruptcy and a total lack of ideas and abilitity.

Re: cover versions
Madonna - American Pie
Seriously though, I really like Westlife's version of Uptown Girl - the original never really done it for me but the new one is fanstastic. I like the "Logical Song", both the original (Supertramp) and the cover (Scooter) and couldnt really pick out a favourite. I also prefer the Oasis version of "I Am The Walrus" to the Beatles', but I doubt many would agree.
Away from bubblegum pop, I quite like Guns' N Roses interpretation of "New Rose" although neither are brilliant (cant remember who done the original but it sucks). I think the Marilyn Manson cover of "Tainted Love" is interesting but I don't particularly like it. Nirvana's "Lake of Fire" and "Where Did You Sleep Last Night" are probably their only 2 great songs, and both are covers. Apocalytica's version of Metallica is an interesting gimmick, but not particuarly good (Metallica music doesnt have the complexity to make an instrument piece worthwhile, and most of the pieces are repetitive and go nowhere).
I also agree with the general 'covers are shit' sentiment. I cant think of a single cover that would be anywhere near my list of '50 best songs ever' or similar.
edit: Sarah Brightman's cover of "Eden" is good (I havent heard the original though).

All the songs on Garage Inc. are covers. In fact pretty much all the songs on CD1 are worthy of mention, though you probably haven't heard the originals of most of them.
Speaking of Guns n Roses, I quite like their version of Live and Let Die.

Re: cover versions
gary jules' version of 'mad world' was infinitely better than the original.
in general i think covers get a bad rap because there is a tendency for untalented people to cover talented people, with unsurprisingly poor results. when talented people/groups do covers, the results are often (usually?) very good: see Hendrix, Guns n Roses, Nirvana, etc.

there is also a great ska-punk version of Hotel California, but I don't knoe who it's by. A lot of versions say NOFX, (but it's definatly not) that's how I found it.
Edit:
White Stripes - Death letter (get a live version, it's amazing)
White Stripes - Stop Breaking Down
Not head the origina versions of these, but their versions are mind-blowing.

Re: cover versions
richard cheese's covers are all brilliant. (personal faves: let's get it started, insane in the brain, fight for your right to party)
I'm with Apothos on the Tainted Love cover, I though it was miles better than Soft Cells attempt (which don't get me wrong is still good, just outdated). I also liked his cover of Sweet Dreams.
RX - Sunday Bloody Sunday (George Bush sound bytes remixed into a cover of this song)
Jennifer Saunders - Holding Out For a Hero
Pennywise - Down Under
Lenningrad Cowboys - These Boots Were Made For Walking
I got a stack more, I'm a cover artist fiend also but sadely can not remember them all. Some of my collection also techinically comes under remix so I didn't include it here.

Re: cover versions
I think the Guns and Roses version of Knocking on Heaven's is dreadful, mind you the original is hardly one of my favourite of Bob Dylan's.
In fact given that he was hardly the most musically innovative person, I haven't heard that many good covers of him.
All Along The Watchtower though, that was indeed a cover and a half.
