Ow
I want money so I can upgrade to Macromedia Studio 8 and Adobe CS2.
This stuff looks pretty nifty. Anybody here used it yet?

Re: Ow
not personally but the words "macromedia" and "adobe" lead me to believe its going to be very very expensive.
How much would the potential damage be?

Re: Ow
CS2 is a pleasing if not strictly necessary upgrade from CS, Macromedia Studio 8 I have no idea about =(

For the noneducational upgrade, I'd need a grand for both.

Dollars. The upgrade for Studio 8 is $399 for me, and the Adobe CS2 even more. This software has always been incredibly expensive.

Re: Ow
Is there any way you can claim it's for work and get your job to pay for some/all of it?

That doesn't really answer his question. You could probably get the software for "free" (as in beer) if you looked for a bit. Why wouldn't you?
Most of the serious apps don't really rely on individual purchases as their prime customer anyway (not that that has much to do with anything).

It's against my principles. I cannot justify illegally downloading software for the sole purpose of gratifying my desires. Just because it is possible, doesn't mean I will do it. Morals are what seperate the conscientious man from the rest. People can do a lot of things to me. They can hurt me with violence, they can villify me, hurt people I care about, throw me in prison, but they can never take my integrity.
I don't have a lot going for me Dante. I'm not particularly talented at anything, I'm not incredibly and prodigiously intelligent, nor am I enthusiastic or enterprising. What I do have is a commitment to my integrity. It is not something so cheap that I would throw it away or compromise it for a misely thousand dollars. The life that I have now, many steps up from where I came from, was enabled by my views.
I don't believe that anything is sacred, nor do I think that thinking the way I do will save me from terrible misery. The depths to which people can fall into misery, due to no fault of their own, has no bottom, but should I take that descent I will be taking something with me that is mine alone.
Adobe is nice, but it is not that nice. Nothing is.

Re: Ow
Im sure there are free trials of this software available....why not download one of those legally and decide if you want to get into debt over software purchases.....

I can't afford it. So I'm just going to have to wait until I am a student next year (hopefully) and I get the same software for $300.

Re: Ow
Im tempted by the studio package by macromedia tbh but at the same time its cost seems somewhat extortionate. Although saying that ill probably be getting captivate soonish simply because it takes a great deal of hassle out of Flash and speeds things up

That's all you really needed to say.
I agree with you about integrity - although I think this is a pretty silly thing to have principles about. Each to his own of course.

I don't believe that stealing is silly. I wrote that essay because I was putting it down in writing to think it out.

Re: Ow
Adobe Stuff
Macromedia Stuff
I know, blatant advertising but I work for NCS and it's not as if Jolt sell design suites.
One thing worth keeping in mind is that Adobe have just bought Macromedia, so you may find the software starts heading in the same direction - development wise at least, it could be worth waiting a year until the two companies have merged their collective heads as it were and released the next generation suites - CS2 and the new MX suite are essentially just updates from the old version with a couple of new features - a Win98 to WinME if you like, as opposed to a complete new design as was seen between the Adobe Design Collection and the Adobe CS Suite.
