[football] *** it's the FA CUP guessing game ***
And gentlemen in GD now abed
Shall think themselves accursed they were not here
And hold their manhood's cheap whiles any speaks
That predicted with us upon FA Cup 3rd round day
32 games this weekend - part 1 of a standalone knockout thing running for the rest of the competiton. Rules? dunno yet, making it up as I go along. I'll probably put people randomly in pairs, with the winners going through along with the highest scoring losers to make 16 in total (assuming enough people enter)
I'm thinking of scoring at 1G3X, with draws at 2G4X and "giant-killings" at 3G6X.
You don't need to know what that means; just quote the fixture post below and put the scores by the teams
first match Friday 7th Jan @1945

Re: [football] *** it's the FA CUP guessing game ***
Can we not have a "Knockout Tournament" where 32 GD players are randomly drawn against one another? Even those who dont play or dont predict could be included just to make up the 32 (For instance , say , Leshy v JammyJim, and since JJ doesnt play or predict, Leshy would win if he even gets 1 point).
This guarantees that we at least keep things entertaining whilst the cup is ongoing.

I'm guessing that he is planning something along those lines but maybe not starting with a player versus player round at this stage of the competition.

Re: [football] *** it's the FA CUP guessing game ***
I'm not sure there is any benefit in having non-playing players. I'd like to make this round a player v player knockout and I'd like non-regular predictors to enter, so it all depends on what the numbers are like at the end of the week. If entries are low it might just be a normal league for now (possibly continuing for the replays and then knocking people out in round 4)

Re: [football] *** it's the FA CUP guessing game ***
surprised there were no late entries... (Apothos for example was the only person not to miss predicting a single game in the whole of 2004)
anyway, I had intended splitting players into pairs etc earlier this afternoon etc. Unfortunately I was a helpless victim of a powercut. 14 ****ing hours without electricity
I haven't typed anyone's predictions in yet, and I don't know any of the results. "Come on the milwall comeback!" from rr_0 is worrying.
So.... a couple of opinions wanted. One big league for simplicity or random split into 10 pairs at this strangely late stage?

Re: [football] *** it's the FA CUP guessing game ***
20+ mins of refreshing to see no response later... my decision then
the only problem I have with not continuing this (to include, as Ste suggested, the replays and postponements) is that I don't know if some of the new players only "entered for the day" or wish to continue if they're doing well...
so I'm going to split the names into pairs, have the highest score from each pair going through to the 4th round, and also the 6 highest scoring runners up, so only 4 will be kicked out this round (and even they can come back if someone who gets through doesn't want to continue). Then we'll have another list for the replays etc that count as part of the total for this round.
OK?
I'll get on with it then.

Re: [football] *** it's the FA CUP guessing game ***
keeping it simple, I numbered everyone 01-20 in the order they entered
01 1-x
02 lokken
03 symm
04 theshadowman
05 reidy
06 blastoderm
07 lhc
08 phalon
09 freakozoid
10 roadrunner
11 koen
12 inferno
13 zharkov
14 midge5
15 jc
16 ste
17 phang
18 hugin
19 stew
20 pablissimo
then it was off to http://random.org/cgi-bin/randseq?min=1&max=20 for a random number sequence...
11 12 19 2 16 4 3 5 18 15 7 1 14 9 17 13 10 20 6 8
order them in pairs...
11 v 12
19 v 02
16 v 04
03 v 05
18 v 15
07 v 01
14 v 09
17 v 13
10 v 20
06 v 08
replace them with the names...
Code:
koen v inferno
stew v lokken
ste v theshadowman
symm v reidy
hugin v jc
lhc v 1-x
midge5 v freakozoid
phang v zharkov
roadrunner v pablissimo
blastoderm v phalon
ta-da!

Re: [football] *** it's the FA CUP guessing game ***
can you do a league as well?
Just out of interest
Then if people get knocked out they can still try and save face by competing in the league...
Also means you have replacements if anyone doesn't enter later on.
What are you doing regarding replays etc? The Burnley Liverpool match is on Tuesday.

I'm part way through checking.... I haven't added the giant-killing longshot bonuses etc yet.
At the moment, it's "rr_0 14 - 16 pabs" (both scores being in the lower-mid range). Bonuses could change that though.
Whoever's playing TheShadowMan has a problem, as he seems to be way ahead

a list for replays and liverpool will be posted later, hopefully everyone will see them before tuesday, and the results will be added to this round.
We've had leagues for the knocked out before; it never really "took off". Fixtures may be duplicated in the normal prediction leagues though.

Re: [football] *** it's the FA CUP guessing game ***
I bet I go out - I think I had a shocking afternoon - just like I predicted, that's what we're meant to do though isn't it, predict? So that makes my prediction right? But that makes my prediction about me being crap wrong? Which makes it right? Ow, my head hurts.

stew... you v lokken is v.close and if you lose, you're almost certain to be in the best 6 of the losing 10
the reason the results are taking so long is my trouble deciding which matches deserve bonuses

Re: [football] *** it's the FA CUP guessing game ***
Any team that beat a team from at least one league above it and any team that drew with a team at least 2 leagues above it?
Shouldn't we have figured this from the start!?
