What is wrong with this picture?
I recently read that the second wealthiest country, per capita in Europe is Ireland.
I then heard on a news report this week that the country with the largest amount of accumulated wealth, exclusive of home valures, is also Ireland. The average Irishman having accumulated assets equal to $190,000 American.
Either:
1: I am going to have to reconsider my long held beliefs on what drinking too much does to you you.
or
2. Conclude that they have ceased selling Guiness in Ireland which accounts for the accumulation of wealth.

Re: What is wrong with this picture?
Mmmm well house prices have gone up 350% in 7-10 years so that accounts for plenty of the "wealth" in this country. We have a very very large percentage of home owners here, we don't rent as a society. So just about ever family has a valuable home due to the inflation.
Then all the land owners, complex owners, apartment owners, landlords etc are sitting on a lot of value.
Exclusive of house value we have 30,000+ millionaires (as reported this week) for a country with fewer than four million people that is a good deal of wealth.
Plus we have several billionares.
With such a large amassed wealth in the country, devided by the releativly stable population numbers no wonder it looks so goon on the balance sheet.
But I'll be honest. The rich are rich, some are very very rich. And the rest of us...well we scrape by just as always.
Oh wait. This post was a question to Johnny specifically...never mind.

Re: What is wrong with this picture?
europe happened, iirc they also have quite a lot of american investment, well europe america and irish government policy like this
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/business/5024782.stm
which basically meant the state took money from the irish people...then gave it back to the irish people, creating subsidies along the way.

Re: What is wrong with this picture?
I heard on World Business Report a while back that Ireland was benefiting a lot (well, more that Britain was missing out, but same thing) because it was the only native English speaking country to have adopted the Euro and was attracting a lot of investment from North America because of that.

Well who, 10 years ago, could have predicted the gigantic rise in demand for potatoes and leprechauns?!

Investment increased 600% in Ireland since my announcement that I was entering the workforce.

Our population's rising dramatically dude. Maybe not third world "jesus h christ buy a condom" population growth but it's very high due to immigration.

I'm not sure how correct this is. Ireland's economy expanded enormously during the 90s thanks to tax breaks set up during the 80s which attracted a lot of tech firms. Some of them are moving out now to <insert generic Asian location> so I doubt you'd be putting the euro as attracting american investment on your top five causes list.

Re: What is wrong with this picture?
I heard Eire no longer wants reunification with Northern Ireland because it would be an economic drain
