Friends, romans, countrymen! lend me your ears...
... or rather your cooking skills.
This week I have been tasked with the creation of a birthday cake. The last time i attempted such a feat i was 8 years old with my mummy. Therefore, i turn to the brilliance of GD for advice.
So, your cake related advice/annecdotes please, in particular i need to know;
What equipment does one require for cake making ?
There are various types of cake, which is best in your opinion ?
Recipies for said cakes would be good.
Any further cake-making tips you have.
my plan B is buying one from asda, but i wish to attempt plan A first.

A tin, some scales (exact weighing is important for baking cakes).

Correct, this is not for a girl though.
Its just a thing in my social circle, we make cakes when its people's birthdays, and now its my turn.

Listen, tell them you made it from scatch if you want. All those mixes are is they take the ingredients that you would get off the store shelf and mix it to the proper mix so you don't get a digusting dry cake and save you lots of time.
The only thing you will have to mix in is flour, sugar, egg and milk and stuff like that.

A nice sponge cake is very easy, My mum did one where you just throw everything in a bowl and whisk it up with an electric whick and there you go. I cant remember the ratios of butter:sugar:flour though.
You wont be able to make any kind of cake without a cake tin, so theres item no. 1 for you to go and get.
Edit: looks like its 1:1:1 from what recipies I can see. and an egg per 50g (ie 3 for a 150g:150g:150g proportioned one)
And its self raising flour

Making a boy a birthday cake won't result in him sleeping with you.

What Ebany said!
Butter icing in middle, sprinkle on top with icing sugar.

You can't go wrong with an angel food cake. Use cake flour for added fluffiness and make sure the cream of tartar isn't stale.

Exactly, it really just mixes a few things toghter that normally would be time consuming and hard and guide you to mix in the rest correctly.

Some form of chocolate cake is usually the win. I don't have any specific recipe to hand though.
