"Sheila's Wheels"
What makes this insurance company not illegal by only accepting women?
Are insurance companies under some sort of exemption when there is proof available that one sex is likely to claim more than another?
Just curious.

I have a personal vandetta against the creators/actors/jingle-writers that had anything to do with that advert.
I wouldn't even bestow upon them the honour of scraping the pebbledashes from my toilet.

Re: "Sheila's Wheels"
If the police force are allowed to give jobs to only women and people from ethnic minorities I'm pretty sure Sheila's Wheels are ok to offer insurance to women only.
Remember, it's only sexist if it is something that discriminates against women and racism can't be used on white/Europeans.
And the advert is shit.

I detest the advert to the point where the Jingle has ruined the mood by entering my head during coitus.

Re: "Sheila's Wheels"
From a couple of CA-type sites, for anyone who cares:
Quote:
There are several situations where discrimination against men or women may be allowed:
[...]
-insurance policies where it can be shown that women are a better or a worse insurance risk than men (though this is being reviewed, and may not be allowed in the future).
|
Quote:
It is not unlawful for an insurance company to discriminate on the grounds of a person’s sex when the company is assessing risk, provided that the company can show that:-
it can provide information to justify the discrimination; and
the information was obtained from a reliable source; and
the discrimination is reasonable in relation to the information available.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion as far as I am aware, even if people want to bundle it with something else, pigeon hole it and disagree with it.

Not sure yet, she has 2 kids and neither are mine. I still love her but I can't help thinking she intended to meet him. She has said she knows how it looks and she expects it is over but I'm not rushing into a decision.

Re: "Sheila's Wheels"
Out of curiousity, are there any types of insurance where men pay less than women?
Given the recent news coverage of women earning less during their lifetime than men, it's obvious that we need the extra money to pay for the outrageous insurance premiums!

Health insurance.
Women also pay more for retirement annuities, although that's because they tend to live longer. :/

This link suggests otherwise for health insurance, but does agree regarding pensions/retirement.

Re: "Sheila's Wheels"
Why are they called "Sheila's Wheels" anyway?
I don't see why Sheila's wheels would be any better than Bob's wheels. Or Danny's wheels.
I'm sure a Bob would be more usefull than a silly bint called Sheila.
And why only wheels?
I can't do anything with only wheels.
It'd be much better to call it bicycle.
Or even better, a car. Or a caterpillar truck. Lots of wheels, good engine, and it hauls lots o' stuff.
Bob's Catterpillar trucks - we sell health insurances
I'm sure there's a good British joke in there somewhere.

Re: "Sheila's Wheels"
Yea, but they do more than wheels alone.
I feel a business plan coming up...
Quote:
Hitchhiker: You heard of this thing, the 8-Minute Abs?
Ted: Yeah, sure, 8-Minute Abs. Yeah, the excercise video.
Hitchhiker: Yeah, this is going to blow that right out of the water. Listen to this: 7... Minute... Abs.
Ted: Right. Yes. OK, all right. I see where you're going.
Hitchhiker: Think about it. You walk into a video store, you see 8-Minute Abs sittin' there, there's 7-Minute Abs right beside it. Which one are you gonna pick, man?
Ted: I would go for the 7.
Hitchhiker: Bingo, man, bingo. 7-Minute Abs. And we guarantee just as good a workout as the 8-minute folk.
Ted: You guarantee it? That's - how do you do that?
Hitchhiker: If you're not happy with the first 7 minutes, we're gonna send you the extra minute free. You see? That's it. That's our motto. That's where we're comin' from. That's from "A" to "B".
Ted: That's right. That's - that's good. That's good. Unless, of course, somebody comes up with 6-Minute Abs. Then you're in trouble, huh?
[Hitchhiker convulses]
Hitchhiker: No! No, no, not 6! I said 7. Nobody's comin' up with 6. Who works out in 6 minutes? You won't even get your heart goin, not even a mouse on a wheel.
Ted: That - good point.
Hitchhiker: 7's the key number here. Think about it. 7-Elevens. 7 doors. 7, man, that's the number. 7 chipmunks twirlin' on a branch, eatin' lots of sunflowers on my uncle's ranch. You know that old children's tale from the sea. It's like you're dreamin' about Gorgonzola cheese when it's clearly Brie time, baby. Step into my office.
Ted: Why?
Hitchhiker: 'Cause you're ****in' fired!

Um, no. The page you linked to [page 4] only talks about annuities, but on previous pages it says women will pay "more than men for some health insurance" [page 1], they will pay "substantially more" for permanent health insurance (aka income protection insurance) [page 2], and that men will pay "slightly less" for critical illness insurance [page 3].
