Ok, I'm a general Usenet n00b.
I (potentially, if I forget to cancel) paid to get a user / pass + server to access the lists.

I have a basic idea of how it works (he says confidently) but any recommendations on free ways to access it with, and so on would be welcome.

I just want to browse it and see what it's like and all the fuss is about.

Free ways to get decent binary group hosting (which I presume is what you want?)

I don't think there's any easy way of doing that. But your ISP will have a news server which may or may not be any good.

And btw, they're generally called groups, not lists unless I'm misunderstanding you*.

* = Very possible, since I originally wrote a completely different post as I thought you meant something else.

Yes, I meant groups not lists.

I noticed you wrote a different post. I have it sitting in my e-mail. I was confused when I went to reply and it'd gone

I have both a news reader and a news server. yes its probably something naughty, although not porn (why would you need to have news groups? It's free all over the internet...)

The main advantage is speed and convenience. We get all our TV / Movie stuff from Usenet at a sustained 600-800kbytes/s rate. Torrents are good, but can sometimes be slow. With Usenet you're always getting from the same server (effectively).

There are lists of free news servers out there (try googling) but I don't know about reliability.

You could try a free trial with one of the news server companies (e.g. giganews or whatever). I don't even know if they do them, but it's possible.

Newzbin.com only costs 25p a week. I highly recommend them (they are the most popular). They index all the files nicely into small nzb's(a bit like torrents) ready for you to download. If you have newsleecher (the latest one) and if they havent disabled it, the supersearch is a handy little tool that you can use for free.

As for usenet providers, most isp's offer a free service although the retention is poor (1-5 days at most) and completion is shit. You're best off paying for a provider.

Instead of newzbin.com you could use http://newzmonster.com/. There is tutorials on the site which hopefully will answer a few of your questions. Its also free and works well for me
