Ah-ha! Ahahahahahaha! Haaaaahahaha!
Oh dear, that plot was so cheesey you could cut it up and make stilton sandwiches with it.

Super new faster-than-light ship gets built which creates wormholes to travel through.
Ship gets tested.
Ship dissapears.
Ship turns up 7 years later orbiting neptune for no adequately explained reason.
Transmission recieved from ship in latin, again for no adequately explained reason. Translates to "save me".
Rescue team go to neptune to rescue crew - crew not there.
Straaaaaaaaaaange things happen along the lines of possessed machiney etc, you know the drill.
Eventual reason given of why the ship is "trying" to kill the crew:
When it went through the wormhole IT WAS CAPTURED IN HELL FOR 7 YEARS AND IS NOW ALIVE AND TRYING TO CLAIM MORE VICTIMS! [reverb effect]BWAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAA![/reverb effect]

I quite liked it. Its a cheesy, not too gory, "Honest im not a mad scientist says Sam Neill" kinda movie. Crap Ending though. Id have let the damn thing kill everyone and then move onto an Earth Orbit and wipe out everyone stupid enough to enter it.

Because the ideas put forward in the film have either been done hundreds of times before and the theory is generally accepted (wormholes as a "shortcut" through spacetime) or they are totally preposterous (wormholes are somehow a path to a realm that's a fictional religious concept, and trap a ships there for 7 years).

Well to me, it never struck me as "hell" or any such fantastical religious context nonsense, just a straightforward "dimension of chaos" type job. Still a cheesy storyline, and to most that wouldn't make much difference, but as a hater of religion it's quite a difference to me.

And seeing as we already have "machines of chaos" eating people (go go toilet) and destroying things (go go london buses), it's not that far fetched really.

Me & my sis lolled heartily at the "save yourself..." bit, but afterwards I thought the premise was acceptable. The same sort of thing as Sphere or hundreds of other SF stories. People make/find an artefact/phenomenon and something bad happens. Not just some material, physical effect, but high level badness.

Sphere the film was infinitely better than Sphere the book. Which isn't entirely on topic but **** you, mother****ers.

That said, I didn't think Event Horizon was a 'bad' film per se, I was entertained for two hours and that's essentially what I'm looking for our of a movie. Unless you people have some other criteria.

Sphere the book was quite good. I read it on a flight home from the US.

Took me about 3 hours. Was obvious right from the off what had happened, and who was going to survive, and how, but fuggit, that meant i didnt have to look at Canada as we flew over it.
