xan-mongers all took xan in rounds 6 through 9.5..
seems they decided to go for some variety.. damn unimaginative xan users. :F

cats have a great advantage with their research bonus, might be that later in the game xans get an upper hand with their better ships.

err....Xan's CR/BS are defnitely not their better ships
I can see attacks veering away from roids, and going towards targettting structures and ships, and xan's FR are far superior at doing that. Building FI, rather than CR+BS means 1 less ship-class, which leaves the option of a second attack fleet a realistic possibility, rather than having small numbers of 2 classes.

The adv/disadv of xan are the same as in previous round though. While you see very few attackers landing on defence this round, Xan are perhaps even more reluctant to do so (rightly so imo!) than other races, as they stand to lose more (sure, they'll kill more too, but thats not really something you think about when half your ships are dead )
I think Xan is easier to do well with than other races, but to do very well (i.e. top-30) its not the ideal race, as it's "all or nothing" mentality isn't productive enough for success.

Cathaar had a huge advantage with research which means they had faster eta and bigger ships sooner and could mine more roids. All of those are huge advantages but now is where it starts to go wrong.

Cath ships are weak. They are massively vulnerable to fighters, they can't handle them at all well. Their primary roiding fleet seems based around Stalwarts which is bad because they only target 1 class and this leaves them even more defensively weak against other classes. Ziko, terran and xand can all put mono-class fleets together that can target 3 ship classes (zikos can do this with FI or FR). This is the stage of the game where big Cathaar planets are starting to get hit quite horribly. Cathaar just end up making a lot of ships for defence that aren't generally useful.

Possibly less xands are at the top because less people took them overall. The research penalty just slows big planets too much. The main disadvantage (being further down the HCT tree) is becoming less of a factor so they could well get more dangerous.

Mainly though it's not the races that get you to the top, it's the players on those accounts.
