Why, exactly?
Its much better then crappy movies like Armageddeon or Black Hawk Down. It actually has something of a story!

Deffeh shouldn't be allowed to have an opinion on this, as he dislikes anything that anyone likes. Also, as Snurx quite rightly points out, why exactly? You can't just make a bold sweeping statement like "Film X is overrated ****e crap. Discuss", without making yourself look stupid, as it shows you have no idea what you are talking about.
Joe Pesci won Best Supporting Actor for his performance, and Goodfellas earned nominations for Best Picture, Best Director, Best Supporting Actress (Bracco), Best Editing, and Best Screenplay Based on Material from Another Medium.
The Academy (and most of the film going population of the world) > Deffeh
Personally it's up there in my top ten films of all time.

Since you listed The Truman Show as one of your favourite films, you've legally lost your right to have an opinion.

I'll defend The Truman Show to the last. I thought it was an original concept for a film about media morality in the 21st century. There are worse films about than The Truman Show.

two words, and perhaps my favourite troll of all time.
Joe pesci's acting performance was good. However, im not enitrely sure what your trying to prove going down the academy route. Think who has won awards in the past. Think what hasnt won awards in the past.
My objection to goodfellas is that it was yet another glorification of gangsters, and the mafia. I think its a thirteen year olds obsession to be amused by an actor putting on an italian accent and saying **** every two seconds. I think its pathetic if you find the fact that they "did drugs" an entertainment point in the film, as someone said on IRC.
Personally, i find gangster films an incredibly overhyped genre. At the moment, in this climate, you could make any half assed gangster film and itd do well. I fail to see peoples obsessions with guns, death, gangs, swearing etc. Im not a fan of death suprisingly, thus when death is dealt with so flippantly in gangster films, i dislike this. People die sometimes. Gangster films glorify death. Goodfellas in particular is the worst ive seen for it. Some gangster films go for a moral message that is of course, completely ignored. Goodfellas ends with "I miss the life. I used to be able to use force and get whatever i like. now im nobody" or something to that effect. Hooray! Lets **** on civility.
Typical responses to this :
1. Do your favourite films use guns and have deaths?
Forest Gump, yes. But death is dealt with in a compassionate and emotional manner. The sheer fact that someone is dying is NOT the focal point, its the effect on Forest.
Groundhog Day, im not sure about guns, there might be a glimpse of one at one point. An old man dies, and Bill Murray's character repeatedly tries to save him each day. Once again, dealt with in a good manner.
The Truman Show, i cant remember any guns in this, and the only person who dies, in fact, doesnt die, and comes back to life.
2. Your problem is that you cant suspend disbelief.
In part, yes. My problem is more though that these films transcend reality. People scoff at accusations of movies/music having an "effect" on young peoples mindsets. Believe me, they do. I have a little brother who is obsessed with gangsters and gangster rap, and the like. I find this unhealthy, as he hangs with a bad crowd, all of whom are also gangster obsessed, and slightly slow. They are a "gang" of sorts, (glasgow has many "young teams", gangs of ****s) and they kick crap out of people smaller/in lesser numbers than them, break things, etc, go out their way to be thugs. This isnt an isolated case, it happened with people in my year too, and all over glasgow. Probably scotland, probably the uk, probably the world to. Some people grow out of it. Some, like a couple of those in my year, dont, and have been in dozens of knife/other assorted weapon fights. They wear duffel jackets that they see their favourite stars wear. They seek to be as thuggish as they can.
Now, dont think im suggesting banning of eminem/gangster films etc, thats unfeasible, and ridiculous.
But its perfectly within my rights to dissaprove, and point out the adverse of fictional tales on the easily influenced.
3. You obviously just didnt get the plot.
Oh, i did. But the plotline/"message" will be of course secondary in anyones mind to the cool cats with guns and cheese wire.
4. You hate everything Deffeh, shut the **** up
Not everything. A substantial amount of fads, and misconceptions, yes. Not everything. Most of all i hate death being portrayed in a flippant light.

If I had had the time to write an answer myself it would have been along similar lines, although I have never seen (all) the Trueman show, so no comment on that.
