Here's what I've gleaned from unofficial sources/speculation:

The Passport is a unified login system for Planetarion X, the portal, a PAX IRC bot and the forums. It seems to have been a high-level decision to implement it, and neither the community nor players were asked, informed or even had explained to them the proposed benefits of the passport. In fact, it just 'happened'. I put forward some possible devil's-advocate style reasons for it:
  • Reduced administration
  • Ability to deliver custom content to paying customers across the portal, forums and game
  • Gimmick

Possible problems:
  • Community fragmentation
  • Technical problems with implementation, as seen with inability to guarantee usernames would be available on the new system
  • Inability to keep seperate usernames across PA and the forums for security

Oh, and the new portal now gives you exactly 'no' content at all. It's at the moment the old announcements board with a facelift and links to in-house tools.
