Graduation in the UK
I'm not sure if graduation is the right word for it, but basically I want to finish my computer engineering study in the UK with a final assignment.
I have to work at a company the last half-year of my study and complete an assignment there.
This idea is still in the "hey this just popped in my head"-phase, but can someone perhaps point me to a site where I can see what my options are?
Or perhaps someone can tell me what their experiences are.

no-one really wants to do new stuff now that the economies of the globe are slowing down, and most companies are happy with their IT, and don't want to take on anymore costs.
it's probably best doing something IT related, to put it on your CV, that way you have a better chance of getting any jobs that do become available

You're more likely to make ends meet in a call centre these days. People ain't recruiting.

i hate to do this but
YOUR TALKING BOLLOCKS MISTER.
doesnt matter if you see 200 jobs advertised, there are ten, 100 times that IT graduates a year in this country.
to put this in context, last year, i went to ten seperate interviews. In total, there were probably 5-700 people applying for those jobs. no, i didnt stand much of a chance , and didnt get any of them.
Call centres are all that are taking on, and the pay and conditions there arent really that great from experience.

Hurrah for my incomptence which means I can't do a degree in computing and so have to find something else to do. Although that probably still means being unemployed so I'm no better off really

alot of courses either A) run a year in industry. this is often not all it is cracked up to be from contacts... it ends up being database entry. or b) do an MSci, it is a 4 year undergrad program, a good lump of the final year is spent on projects.
as people here have said, don't bother with IT, no jobs.

Those looking for IT should consider being a plumber. I hear there is a high demand in the UK and I've heard a lot of IT contractors are doing this while the spending slump continues.
I was thinking about doing this: Directing pipes and fixing leaks, sounds like what I do already

Call Centres have this thing of recruiting loads of people, then downsizing to then upsize again 3 months later (I think this is a tactical way of firing a lot of "useless" employees effortlessly). This seems to have created a Call Centre culture of uncertainty - and with the kind of tech going in these days they are like battery hen farms. I think its time we redefined how call centres work (Being in the 'know' this is the case but it will take a few years before the employees benefit).
Call Centre Jobs are ideal starting ground but you can get trapped in staying in one. Steer clear especially of call centres run for Utility and Telephony companies. The happiest call centre employees I have ever encountered seem to work for either banks or small specialist companies.

I don't think most of you really understand what I actually have to do to graduate.
I have to go to a company, where I get somesort of assignment/project I have to work on for half a year (5 months actually)
If I finish that assignment/project after 5 months and my teachers/graduation official think I've done well enough I get my diploma.
For example, I worked at Fancom half a year ago for school and programmed some controller there as assignment. I got a grade for the result of that assignment.
So, I can't just go to some callcenter and work there. I need a specific assignment/project of which the result determines whether I graduate or not.
I think it can be compared to your socalled intern-period, but I'm not 100% sure.
Anyway, I heard Electronic Arts has an office in the UK. Gonna try there for sure. Else I can always try the big companies like BT and ask if they have an assignment for me.
Does anyone know where I can find a list of the bigger IT companies in the UK? Or can you name a few interresting software development companies?

But you would have to work for 63months to be able to afford the land.

I'm sure you would have £1.27 somewhere, from living in England.
