Netgamers
About time we move from netgamer?
Lately P has been away too fking often, and I for one am tired of using it.
This will lead to alliances start using their own irc networks again, which is shit, as I have to open another client, or have another "Status" window open.
I beg thee netgamers, stop being shit, or lets find another place

Re: Netgamers
You will encounter these problems which ever IRC network you move to. No network is 100% stable or reliable.
As far as I know a lot of Alliance still do use their own network in the intrests of "security".
We can't justify a move just because you don't like what we currently have, which is a well established network that the community are used to along with the good relations we have with those that run it.

1up didnt
Angels dont
New Dawn dont
As far as im aware Ascendancy, ToF, eXil et al dont.
Wishmaster is correct. Netgamers lately has had the rapists touch. ITs shit. It should be upgraded somehow or whatever the cool internet people do. Sort out P etc.

Re: Netgamers
Yesterday's glitch seems to have been related to the game being down at the same time since pretty well everything Jolt was unaccessible for a couple of minutes. (which includes the london server)
As far as I know one of the servers that made up NetGamers that was responsible for most of the recent netsplits has been delinked until its connection has been sorted out.

Re: Netgamers
Omen/eXi/Angels/ND...
all top alliances..none using their own.
because netgamers used to be reliable. ATM I would prefer moving to another server for alliance purposes, as I dont wanna invite people manually / change to key every other day.
And marv, its not about being 100% reliable..but it being down for days, then down again..and again.. It used to be good, lately it hasnt been.
A2, the "glitch" yesterdya was only for a few mins, thats np..but when I saw P split,( AGAIN - and afraid of it being down for ages again) it gave me a fking heartattack. I blame that event for me not being able to sleep that night

This might shock you but.... it might make more sense posting a rant at NetGamers reliability on the NetGamers forums.

PATeam can't rant "upwards" at the system.
The NG admin don't really read this forum (though some may do in the capacity as PA players).
Planetarion just has partner status, meaning we get globals and what the not other such posh things. We have no actual influence or power on the running of the network.
So if you have a problem / complaint with the network, you have to take it to them and make it to their admin.

Re: Netgamers
well its up to you guys to check your partner status then marv, there are other networks you can use as oficial ones than netgamers.
as its atm getting sloppy and not provide a stable service.
but that will ofc never happen as that mean you have to do stuff

Just needed that last line didn't ya.
Lookin for recommendations of specific servers you have in mind, or evidence that you've discussed the possibility with admins of other servers about such a prospect. IRC logs will suffice.
"doing stuff" is a wonderful thing.

Re: Netgamers
I think its worth pointing out that NG are probabaly as annoyed as we are about recent performance and that I am sure they will work to try and improve it.
It will never be possible to get guaranteed reliability on a network without paying for it, with a bigger network that has more at stake if reliability is poor then relaibilty may be higher, but it is also highly unlikely that we could get the level of options and service that are possible with netgamers.

Re: Netgamers
Lets face it, no-one plays Planetarion for its utterly crap ingame features. PA is run on IRC/outside the game and that is what makes it so great. IRC is one of if not the most important things to the game and should be a top priority. I find it quite laughable how PATeam can try and pull off the "Its nothing to do with us" line. If it effects PA it is everything to do with you.
If you werent lazy/incompetent or both you would know what the reliability problems were caused by and know what (if anything) NetGamers are doing to prevent the same problems in the future, thus be able to explain it to the PA community.
Sadly instead we get the same old rubbish from the same old people. At least ban them from posting (alliances are still way ahead of you).

Re: Netgamers
In my eyes, Planetarion should go back to its own IRC server(s) and to be honest its long overdue; doing a quick /list on IRC reveals that #planetarion is by far (at time of writing) the most populated channel, followed by #newdawn. Granted all this shows is the amount of people but if the 2 most populated channels on Netgamers are PA related, there should be a bigger "sway" of people. The amount of times there has been a /global advertising a CH, round sign-ups or tick start and someone has come into #planetarion saying "why the global" (cleaned up version) is quite staggering. The management of the NG servers is questionable as well - there are times when you have to wait and wait and wait and wait for a response as NG operate a policy of if you have a server your more or less made an IRC opper, which in my eyes is whole heartedly wrong - yes there bringing something but doesnt mean they have to be made an opper.
Yes, being on Netgamers does/has bought new players (and we all know that players = money) to the game but surely if PA is going to have a future it should be able to stand alone? And there must be other ways of getting players to join the game other than /globals?
Question for Kal / PA Team - do we actually have any IRC-oppers or people who have access to do /globals, /glines etc? If not, there should be someone from PA Team who has the access to do so

Re: Netgamers
Mushroom is an irc oper and also in pateam. There is also uberfish which resides in #planetarion.ops with this capability
No-one else in pateam requires or should be given such access. Its a tool which is not to be used as a club.
I have, in the past ranted at pateam members for continually trying to extend their own access - not because they need it but because they *want* it.

NG policy I believe states that each partner should have two reps who can request globals. In the olden days that was myself and Mushroom. I think things may have been relaxed recently and that Mushroom as well as people in the partners channel (myself and Appoco) can request globals.
Globals should nominally be request through the partners channel, failing that #feds and failing that by nagging any irc opper you can find...
EDIT: correction myself or appoco are the onyl ones who can technically request globals, but if we arn't around as NG are aware that A2 and Muchroom run the channels side of things they would probabaly listen to them.

Re: Netgamers
Why has this changed into a discussion about ops?
It's a well known fact that netgamers is less reliable than the average irc network, and obviously no network is 100% perfect.

He didnt sound all that sure himself, nore was it presented in detail to specifically answer the issue. Again we see another thread filled with rubbish by PATeam posters, which ends up hiding or drawing attention away from any even slightly useful information.
There is nothing worse than people who no not learn from mistakes. Again and again you completely fail at communication on the forums yet nothing ever changes. If PATeam were a PA alliance you would be F-crew, your both shit at what you do and you both seem to think you have a moral highground to stand on.
This thread raises an important issue that deserved a straight foward and coherent reply, that at least looks like the poster had put some effort in researching beforehand. Instead we get:

Following on from this I can now confirm that the Andromeda server (andromeda.mo.us.netgamers.org) has been delinked and can no longer be connected to until their connection issues have been addressed. It is also out of the "round robin", so connecting to irc.netgamers.org won't connect you to it. This has lead to an improvement in network stability, as I'm sure that regular users have noticed.
For our North American users there is now a new server, following on from the success of Underworld NO. The new server is Underworld CA, available on underworld.ca.us.netgamers.org (please try and ignore the geographical problem in that address [edit: apparently it's in California not Canada which means the .ca.us bit is OK and won't trigger a diplomatic incident]), which is also (I think - cos I've not ended up on it yet) on the "round robin" on irc.netgamers.org
I hope that that is something towards the more comprehensive reply you were looking for.

Re: Netgamers
Basically what A2 said..
andromeda won't be coming back into the round robin until the stability problems they were suffering have been cured (if that happens at all...)
A few people have mentioned one particular incident which was indeed due to the entirity of jolt disappearing from the internet for a few minutes, and there's very little we could do about that other than reroute the servers around it. Usually london is one of the most stable servers we have.
Aside from this, despite what some people might think we also get extremely pissed off when things go wrong, especially with the frequency it has happened recently. We don't like our partners becoming exasperated with the service we're trying to provide.
Hopefully (hopefully!) we've turned a corner in this now.. We're working on a new structure for the server links involving some new resources we've brought in, and we're also getting towards moving P to a newer more stable location. Watch this space, etc.
Also this isn't my nick, I just registered this account ages ago and don't want to register another one...

Re: Netgamers
in all honesty, i've always preferred firefly, simply because it's one of the oldest ones.
Generally with the support services of P and the servers being generally up, we have a very good reliable service, with a server generally devoid of complete utter dickheads. Whether we share is neither here nor there, we still have all the channels and services we need.
In that aspect, PA hasn't got much to worry about, it's the game itself that needs a fix.
