Some people have managed to mvoe to SA and stay there, some twats keep posting here thought (lo phang, jakiri, nod etc.)

In the end sounds like a great rule in fitting with the SA style (with the natural exception being the lowtax permission to attack a forum, usually a pedo one).

This is the main reason for the "lurk before you post" rule - it's just common sense and you should do it anyway regardless of where youre posting. If you don't understand the forum dynamic and just wade in posting whatever crap you feel like, you deserve to be flamed and/or banned.

In my opinion its the aggressive attitude towards shit threads/posts/posters that has kept the SA forums at a relatively high standard of quality since ther inception, in comparasion to most other other forums which generally degenerate into a "post whatever shit you like"-fest within a year or so. If you want high-quality forums, you have to accept a trade-off for that, namely a low tolerance regarding shit quality posts.

And yeah, skiddy's thread was pretty bad. It wasnt completely terrible, and he'd probably have got away with it if he wasnt new, but meh. The 'how do I get into the porn business" question could have been asked in a better way. In particular, 1) he posted it in the wrong forum, which showed a blatent disregard for the rules, and 2) the post itself was a string of 5 loosely strung together sentences which began like this:

Me and a friend have decided its time to ditch the good 'ole nine till five job and enter into the world of pornographic material.

Other than casual sex with slappers in the local night spots, neither of us have porn industry experience.

It reads like the kind of shit you'd expect to find on something like genmay or drunkenforums.com If you want a comparasion, you could think of it as being the difference between posting a well-reasoned argument about why the US invasion of Iraq was wrong, and posting "LOL BUSH = HITLER FUKK AMERIKKKA". They are both essentially saying the same thing, but the mode of presentaiton is vastly different.

Maybe. I was part of a reasonably high volume mailing list (political) which had a few hundred members and adopted a similar attitude towards "bad" posts. People were regularly banned if they repeatedly made bad posts, and flamed if they posted things outside of normal conventions.

It's often acceptable, but I find it a little tiresome. Especially because if someone "established" posted the same thing there wouldn't be the same reaction (this happens here as well). And so it (partially) becomes a macho thing where people are being pointlessly agressive not just to newbie threads, but in general. Glancing a the front-page of GBS today for instance, there's some mockery of a girl whos cut herself, plus some general abuse towards pan handlers. Hey, those are tough targets!

As you say, I suppose it depends what you want from a forum. I think a lot of the time when you seem to exceed a certain membership you start to adopt traits like this. General Mayhem certainly has posts like this, e.g. in response to a presumably prominent person quitting : "If anything on this forum upsets you that much you should really seek a dark hole to crawl into and **** off." or "Go ride the boo-hoo train, next stop: nobody gives a shit." and so on.

Also, I think defining Skiddy's thread as on par with "BUSH=HITLER" etc is slightly unfair.

Well you're going to get threads like that everywhere. Mocking people is a time-honoured part of SA tradition, and it isnt going to go away any time soon. I don't like GBS that much anyway. I mean, as a "general discussion" forum its probably the best one on the internet in my opinion, but I'm not a huge fan of that type of forum really. I read GBS every so often and there are some decent threads there at times, but I wouldnt have an SA account just for that. I normally spend my time in both the politiics forum and in FYAD, which doesnt have any of the elitistry of GBS and is generally a happy place where people can chill with friends and just hang out.
