problem with a work comp
one of our computers at work seems to have a very strange problem.
When you start up word, within a minute of starting it up it resets the computer, just as if you had pressed the reset button, and this happens every tim e you try and use word on that computer.
Our I.T. dept have tried to solve this problem, but have failed miserably, cos they are crap.
Just wondered if anyone could think of a reason why a computer would do this?


In case you need to know, the computer is a 6 month old Viglen built p4 1.2Gb running windows 2000, and we have 4 more of the exact same setup of computer that run fine

You want my suggestion? Standard windows fix.
Uninstall office. Reinstall office.

Failing that, try getting any office service packs that are around.
If that still fails, resort to standard windows fix mark II:
Uninstall windows. Reinstall windows.

Delete Normal.dot

That solves about a billion Word related problems and was a beloved fix when I worked in tech support.

Also turn on error reporting, Windows might simply be restarting because it encountered a serious error (although that may just be XP that does that, I forget).

Obviously if you've reformatted, etc then it could just be a hardware problem, e.g. dodgy RAM which for some reason is only noticable when you load Word, etc, etc.

both have been done im afraid, in fact, one of our it boys was so happy with himslef for reinstalling windows he nearly burst!
that is until we phoned him the next day to tell him that that hadn't worked either


Edited for dante's post: possibly bad hardware, that is what i have suggested, but they wont replace it cos they are stingy bastards

Ghost the OS over from one of the other machines (if they really are identical like you said) and run <insert favourite benchmark program> for as long as it takes.

If it crashes, the problem will prolly be either cpu/memory/mobo - and I would be ringing Viglen up to get it replaced.
