which hasn't exactly been well covered by many news agencies is going on in Somalia, its worth remembering that it was near on 10 years ago when the Taleban took Kabul. Whats interesting is the Islamists in Somalia are being welcomed as the Taleban initially were since they bring stability to their day-to-day lives. Dubya can't really ignore this can he? after all the opinions on how clinton's myopia in the 90s let the islamists flourish by not aggresively countering them he surely can't let the african franchise of the taleban set up in Somalia. So how to stop this? the CIA funded warlords have lost and the military is otherwise engaged in Iraq and Afghanistan. Maybe just accept the enevitable and let them take over, when the democrats win the next election blame them for it all.

Or maybe the US military is capable of operating in Somalia, Afghanistan and Iraq at the same time, as well as bombing Iran no doubt.

from the perspective of world leaders its in africa, why waste troops in a place like that. What will you get out from it?

From a human perspective its a ****ed up country, which needs support and guidance of the international community.

I actually know someone from Somalia. She's a very educated anthropology student and a very graceful person. From what I have learned from her, it is not a bad country at all, although I agree it has some problems.

I wasn't aware the three nations were linked in that manner? Id hope britain would have the backbone to recognise northern somalia's (iirc somaliland) independance.

I know this thread didn't get many replies, i was serious about a possible invasion though. If Somalia becomes the next al queda training centre can the US reallly stand by and let it happen? If Iraq hadn't have been invaded the answer probably would have been a simpler 'yes' to invade, but as it is i can't see how the US can carry on its war on terror and ignore such a dangerous situation occuring whilst at the same time if it does decide to invade can it really carry out three massive operations in three different nations at the same time?

Well they are.

In re Somaliland I strongly agree. The problem however is that the F&CO won't acknowledge it unless the UN grants it country status. The UN won't grant it country status because the other African nations block the application. The application is being blocked because the gov. of Somaliland has expressly stated that it will apply for dominion territory status from the UK.

It is an appalling situation in which a lot of innocent people are suffering needlessly because UN and EU aid can not go directly to the respectable, hard-working and democratic Somaliland government but must instead go through the warlords in Mogadishu
