I've worked out why Dell are so rich
So here I am, sitting in my office and the following conversation occurs :
Kevin : Matt, I need a new laptop
Matt : What spec are you looking at
Kevin : Dont know, something to run AutoCAD software and general surfing the internet
Matt : Anything I should know?
Kevin : Yes, we only have a business account with Dell and since the director is away, we have to buy from Dell and you have a budget of £450.
So I hop along to the Dell website and start looking around I find a laptop for £399 which I think should be worth while. So I proceed to the ordering page and decide to order with it a bigger battery and the driver CD (which they now actually charge for) and I go to the check out. Now the price has suddenly inflated to £465.06. Dell are charging £51.06 for the postage of the said laptop, driver CD and battery. So for fun (having a slow day as you can tell), I removed the driver CD and battery so it went back to the original spec (as advertised for £399) and went to the check out and I was still expected £51.06 for the postage of just the laptop.
Is this just Dell being blood sucking demons or is this the norm for buying laptops online? Ive just looked on eBuyer at there postage rates and for the same spec system your charged the princely sum of £4.69.

c/ It doesnt fully work - i now only get 11 minutes battery life etc

Yeah, you're right £450 for a laptop is an outrage. You should drop out of society, learn a range of fighting styles and eventually seek revenge.

Re: I've worked out why Dell are so rich
£50 may seem excessive, especially compared to eBuyers cost but its actually not that high. For an item that size to be courierd to you on a certain day, during a certain window its not really that excessive.
Comet tried charging me £7 to deliver a fan to me. The earliest they could deliver was in 4 days and they gave me a window of 7am till 6pm. To get a smaller window or quicker delivery would have cost me between £12-£25 and thats for a £20 fan

People are stupid for even considering buying from Dell. If you buy from Dell, then I hope you get face AIDS. I have no sympathy for them.

Re: I've worked out why Dell are so rich
Think it cost me about a fiver for delivery on my laptop. It arrived 2 days later when i wasnt in so i just went round to the depot in the evening and picked it up with no problem.

Re: I've worked out why Dell are so rich
Buying from Dell as a business is generally good, from my not-so-limited experience.
I don't think we've ever paid a delivery charge, just ring your account manager and ask them to deduct it and they generally will.
The customer service for businesses is pretty good as well, if you ring them and it's obvious you know what you're talking about they'll pass you up the chain straight away.

Re: I've worked out why Dell are so rich
The Dell selling technique goes like this:
Advertise a computer at a stupid low low price.
Omit VAT from above.
Omit postage from above.
Omit essentials from above (driver CD, XP CD, etc).
Provide shit essentials if they can't be omitted (PSUs that blow up in a year and one day, batteries that drain in 30 minutes).
Charge exorbitant amounts to include or upgrade essentials.
Slap numerous "free" products on PC, mention in tiny tiny print that they're 30 day trials, make them a pain to remove, and recieve money from the software company for doing so.
Add an arbitrary charge of random value which is not explained anywhere.
Profit.
The Dell aftersales care system is similar:
Install as many proprietary parts as possible, then charge a 500% markup to replace them.
Deny that things blatantly covered under the warrenty are in fact covered.
Charge for honouring the warrenty.
Charge for sending someone to carry out repairs covered under the warrenty.
Add an arbitrary charge of random value which is not explained anywhere.
Profit.
I'd buy from HP before buying from Dell, and that's saying a lot.
If at all possible, wait until your manager is back then buy from someone like Acer, who have a reputation for being good value for money but also, and here's the key word, reliable.
[edit]
Also, is it just me who finds it rather suspicious that good old Kev has waited til the director is out of town to try and score himself a new laptop? Hmmmm!

Re: I've worked out why Dell are so rich
Don't get me wrong, there are plenty of reputable PC and laptop providers. It's just that Dell isn't one of them.

Re: I've worked out why Dell are so rich
Dell forgot it's roots. They started by offering lower prices and then they got big and expensive. Now other companies offer much more for a lower price.
To most of us here in America Dell Customer Service is Horrible. Them seem to outsource to companies where the ability to speak english clearly is not a nessessity for employment.
Dell used to be good but they let quality slip, prices rise, customer service by the cheapest bidder, and now that they have gouged ever possible parts cost they jack up shipping charges beyond what a friend who lived next to the factory could ship it for.

Re: I've worked out why Dell are so rich
Dell aren't all that bad... at least, not over here. I just ordered a desktop during their "no shipping/handling costs" week, and got it for a fairly decent price too...
2.8ghz dual core, 1gig ddr2 ram, 256 ATI radeon video... Comes with a 19" flat screen monitor too.
Cost me a little less than $1250 cdn... Which I think is roughly 600ish UK pounds.

Dell with Linux aren't bad, and Dell's are still better priced than the competitors.

Re: I've worked out why Dell are so rich
Dell is rich because many people choose to pay what Dell asks for their products. That is the only and solemn reason.
