you can.
however with your board, you get a performance increase by pairing your ram, as it is then able to access them both simultanenously
(this is from its review on www.tomshardware.com)
so i'd recommend putting another 512 of the same type into the 'other colour' slot.

JJ you rob a bank or something? Thats serious kit you've got there \o/

I have no idea what pc2700 means, but best performance is gained by having your ram synchronous to your fsb - so on the new 166 fsb babies, ddr 166*2 etc.

Asynchronous timings have some interesting phenomenas that I dont know about, but I know its true \o/ best way imho

As long as it's the same type of RAM there should be little problem (IE: don't put in PC2100 and PC2700 RAM in at the same time). I don't know if it's NESCESARY to have the RAM of the same vendor, one can always try.

The size of the sticks doesn't matter. Combining 512 and 256 MB sticks is perfectly possible.

to have the "best" possible stability where ram is concerned, you want to use sticks of the SAME make AND size AND speed.

However, it is just as possible to get good stability with a mixture of makes/sizes/speeds.

You can run ram of different speeds but you will be limited to the slowest stick. Personally I buy ram that is rated above my CPU (266Mhz FSB) then run it at the fastest timings.

PC<num> is supposed to be a representation of the theoretical bandwidth of the ram - PC2700 = DDR333. Theoretically it can transfer 2700Mb a second. Equally, PC2100 = DDR266.

You're quite right about running ram synchronously - I actually get more speed out of my DDR333 ram when I run it at 266, because I have a 266Mhz fsb (AXP2000). Must be something to do with latency or something.
Anyway - running it at 266Mhz allows me to manually force the lowest possible latency settings without affecting stability - I tried that at 333Mhz and the thing fell over backwards every 10 seconds.

Incidentally JJ - where the fk do you get your money? If you have found a way to make it grow on trees, I'd appreciate the instructions ta.
