[Elections] For Tacticus about Voting system failing students.
Yes I know this is a hyperlink to an Something Awful thread but seeing as we have maybe 3-4 american posters here and not many of those are students I decided this hyperlink was appropriate.

Now for the jist of the thread I linked too to save you all going through the thread trying to sort out fact from crap.



Student from Maryland is at a University in West Virginia, according to that 2002 act thing he's allowed to register to vote in West Virginia, this has been successfully done by other posters in that thread for example a student from california who is registered in Ohio and in those cases they just nullify your old registered address for the new one, however he has recieved a letter of denial to vote just 3 days ago which means he has to either go down the provisional ballot route or return to maryland to vote.

Other Horror Stories from the thread include...

People not recieving Absentee ballots they had mailed over 20 days in advance and having to get their parents to obtain one and fed-ex it to them.

Student in Florida who is registered in CO that didn't get his ballot even though he requested it.



This is just a small handful of students recieving big problems over voting in the elections and there hasn't been much time passed but it's amusing the difficulties students are having in being disenfranchised in swing states. It'll take till after the election I assume before we know the full extent but it doesn't sound good already and I'm sure there are just as many if not more people who don't use those forums who are suffering the same problems, proportionately.

Undoubtedly there are numerous problems, but I'd say most of them were due to incompetence of those involved, rather than any malice and/or scheming.

From what I've read the problems seem to be with the response of the mailing system and the departments involved in sending out the ballots, one post demonstrated that it was much easier to get his ballot by getting his parents in his home county to get the ballot and fed-ex it rather than do it through the official channels that should be guranteeing your ballot getting there in time.

I see a big issue in implementing a system that still allows disenfranchising of the possible left leaning vote purely through incompetence of the administration in charge, given how easily it could be deliberate with reference to swing states.
